STAKEHOLDER INPUT | SARS VAT MODERNISATION

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is inviting businesses and other interested stakeholders to provide input on its proposed Digital VAT Model – an important step towards modernising the way VAT is administered in South Africa.

The proposed model brings together e-Invoicing, e-Reporting and an interoperability framework, with the longer-term aim of creating a more digitally integrated VAT system that reduces administrative effort, improves accuracy and enables the secure exchange of VAT transaction data.

As these proposed changes could have practical implications for businesses, accounting systems and VAT administration, SARS is seeking input from stakeholders to help shape an approach that is practical, secure and suited to South Africa’s economic environment. Businesses and stakeholders are therefore encouraged to review the Consultation Paper and provide their input.

Celebrating World Space Week, observed annually from 4 to 10 October, we are proud to help inspire the next generation of innovators through the Atlantis Space STEM Programme.

In partnership with Max IQ Space and South African National Space Agency (SANSA), learners from five Atlantis high schools explored space science, satellite technology, engineering and Earth observation through hands-on STEM activities. These experiences sparked curiosity, encouraged critical thinking and introduced learners to exciting opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Atlantis SEZ recently welcomed a Dutch green hydrogen delegation, highlighting growing international interest in investment, clean technology and partnership opportunities within South Africa’s green economy.

The delegation, coordinated by the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA), comprised representatives from eight Dutch companies and organisations, including Boskalis, Gasunie, Hydrogen Power Solutions BV, Impact Hydrogen, Port of Rotterdam, Prodrive Technologies, Theo Cilliers RESH2 and TNO.

The Atlantis SEZ is heading to .

The Atlantis Special Economic Zone will be at Africa E-Mobility Week & Forum 2026 at Nooitgedacht Estate in Stellenbosch from 28–30 September 2026. As Africa’s e-mobility and green economy sectors continue to evolve, AEW2026 provides an important platform for investors, manufacturers and industry stakeholders to connect, exchange insights and explore opportunities for localisation, investment, and industrial growth.

On Tuesday, 29 September at 13:45, the Atlantis SEZ will also bring delegates to the panel discussion, “Advancing E-Mobility as a Platform for Regional Growth and Industrialisation,” on the Solutions Stage. The session promises lively discussion and diverse perspectives from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), MellowVans, GreenCape and Africa E-Mobility Week on the role e-mobility can play in unlocking regional economic growth and strengthening Africa’s industrial value chains.

The Atlantis SEZ is heading to a global stage.

Today we welcomed Thapelo Tladi and Diana Cochrane-Van Eeden (South Africa Centre for Industry and Technology (SACIT) and Olivia Zeydler (World Economic Forum) to the Atlantis SEZ - and with them, confirmation that the ASEZ will be profiled internationally as part of the WEF's Transitioning Industrial Clusters (TIC) Initiative.

The West Coast Industrial Hub (Atlantis SEZ, Freeport Saldanha Bay IDZ and Wesgro) joined TIC in August 2025. Launched at COP26, the initiative now spans 40 industrial clusters across 20 countries - all working towards shared economic growth, job creation, and lower emissions.

Today's visit was a chance to show what green industrial development looks like in practice here, and to exchange insight with SACIT and WEF on the role SEZs play in a sustainable, inclusive economic transition. Being profiled among South Africa's TIC-participating SEZs puts Atlantis SEZ's progress in front of a global audience - and gives us a seat at the table to learn from other clusters doing the same work.

The Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) joined the uYilo E-Mobility Summit, represented by our Commercial Executive Asanda Vos. The Summit was held at the Nelson Mandela University Ocean Science Campus in Gqeberha from 26 to 27 August 2026. Under the theme, "Accelerating Electric Mobility Implementation in South Africa: From Innovation to Industrial Participation," the summit brought together leaders from industry, government, academia, and the innovation ecosystem to explore practical pathways for advancing South Africa’s electric mobility sector.

The Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Dr Nomalungelo Gina addressed the gathering and emphasised the need to accelerate the transition to electric mobility, development smart sustainable transport infrastructure. Our CEO, Matt Cullinan, joined the panel discussion, Case Examples of Green Industrial Mechanisms and Related Policy Levers, hosted by Enzi Ijayo Africa Initiative, the African Future Policies Hub and Southern Transitions as part of the Green Industrial Policy in Southern Africa workshop in Cape Town. During the session, Matt shared insights on SEZs and Green Industrial Action in South Africa, highlighting the role that Special Economic Zones can play in advancing green industrialisation and supporting sustainable economic development across the region.

The discussion brought together regional experts exploring pathways towards a green economy, including perspectives on e-mobility in Kenya and green hydrogen development in Namibia.
