Two men are each going to prison for two years for organised dog fighting in Atteridgeville, Pretoria.

National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) senior inspector Wendy Willson said Tebogo Maselwane, Thato Manzini and seven others were arrested on June 22 “with the blood of their dogs still fresh on their hands”.

Willson said their pit bull terriers died for the “sick satisfaction of others”. The NSPCA and police rescued 14 dogs during the raid.

Maselwane and Manzini pleaded guilty and magistrate Pierre Lourens on Thursday sentenced them to prison without suspension or the option of a fine. They were also declared unfit to own fi****ms or care for any animals for five years.

Lourens said: “It is necessary that this evil be addressed, because this is evil.”

Willson said Lourens spoke about how organised dog fighting “encourages and condones a level of cruelty that is abhorrent and detestable in the mind of any reasonable or civilised person, and that we have reached a level of civilisation... where a clear message has to be sent out to the people who want to commit these heinous and barbaric acts, that they will be punished and not just acknowledged”.
The dogs in question paid with their lives for the sick satisfaction of others and the NSPCA wishes to thank State Prosecutor Vuyo Lutywantsi for his professional and swift handling of the case, the community members of Atteridgeville who’s sense of morality and reporting of the crime resulted in justice for all, the donations of caring South Africans and the support of the DogsTrust Worldwide, without which, rescues of this nature simply would not be possible.

The court case against the remaining seven accused continues on 13 November 2018.

Quote For The Day:

IDEAS ARE ABUNDANT; DRIVE ISN'T.
Perhaps the greatest factor that determines whether or not an entrepreneur will be successful isn't the business idea itself, but rather the entrepreneur's willingness to try (and keep trying ) to turn the idea into reality. Great ideas are abundant, but it's what we decide to do with them that counts.

A Soshanguve tavern owner has been sentenced to two years in prison for contravening Gauteng noise control regulations.

Phillip Mafata, 44, was found guilty of 26 charges relating to noise pollution after he appeared in the Tshwane Municipal Court, sitting in the Soshanguve Magistrate's Court, on August 3.

City of Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the City's municipal health services section took the case to court after a neighbour, Kenneth Sithebe, laid a complaint.

Sithebe said the noise at the tavern caused "anguish in the neighbourhood" because music would be played into the early hours of the morning.

The City quoted Sithebe saying: "The torture he inflicted on my family and I, causing us four years of sleepless nights, will hopefully come to an end. I am happy with the judgment. I hope it will send a strong message to those who operate their businesses at the expense of others, causing them serious psychological harm."

Mafata was previously fined R12 000 for contravening noise control regulations after he pleaded guilty to the charges. Half of the fine was suspended for three years on condition that he would not be found guilty of a similar offence within that period.

Handing down his judgment, Magistrate JC Kruger said the community expected justice from the courts and that a prison sentence was a fitting punishment for Mafata.

"The accused did not listen to the advice from environmental health practitioners even after they served him with notices and [explained] the consequences of his actions. History has proven that Mafata has no respect for the rule of law and his neighbours," Kruger was quoted as saying.

Gauteng Noise Control Regulations of 1999 stipulates that noise generated by a device or activity on a property may not be audible beyond the boundaries of such a property.

My Body is NOT Your Crime Scene!

On the 1st of August 2018, a day that marks the beginning of women's month, women and gender non-conforming people (GNC) from all sectors of South Africa will shut down the country in protest against gender-based violence.
Lesotho and Botswana will also form part of the mass action.
We have nothing to celebrate on 9 August. Every week we receive multiple reports of women, children, and gender non-conforming people who have been brutally murdered, kidnapped, or abused, and there is no sense of urgency from our leaders to find ways in which society can tackle this violence.
Women including the LGBTQIA+, children, and GNC people keep dying at the hands of men in South Africa, and something needs to be done.
This is an ongoing national crisis. We call on all women and GNC people to stay away from work and join the protest on 1 August 2018 in their respective provinces, Universities, and colleges.
A memorandum of demands will be handed over to the government on the day of the shutdown with clear actions. We will share information about the protest action over the following weeks.
