Another YMS 🩵 success story 🌟

Meet Nobuhle Mthembu, one of our YamiMine 💙 participants.

Nobuhle had her qualification, but the job search wasn’t easy. Starting a business felt out of reach until she remembered something she already had: a sewing skill ✂️

She saw a post about applying for the job online and asked a friend to help her apply since she didn’t have data. She got a call back, and that’s how she got the job with YamiMine 🙌

Since joining, she’s picked up more than sewing. She learned communication and how to speak to customers, how to run a business and stay compliant, and the importance of hygiene and keeping her workspace clean 📋

With her second salary, she bought a sewing machine and stationery. She managed to buy fabric to make pinafores, and now she sells them to her community 🧵

From struggling to speak in front of people to running her own business 💛

Tholakele Sabela came across the YamiMine opportunity on Facebook and applied. “I am a very shy person and used to struggle to stand in front of people,” she says. “I could only speak confidently with people I knew.”

Through the programme she built her communication and speaking skills, and developed great people skills along the way. She was able to save and prepare for her graduation, and graduated successfully with everything she needed, earning a Diploma in Human Resources this year.

Not only that, she also started her own business. She now sells perfumes, and it’s doing well. She’s able to use her salary to buy stock and continue growing her business.

From tuck shop visits to running a full kitchen 🧁

Samkelisiwe Shazi is a YamiMine participant whose journey started with the basics. The main skills she learned came from visiting tuck shops, seeing what it really takes to run a small business.

Today she’s baking full trays in her own kitchen, putting those lessons into practice every single day.

From renting a small space to running her own kitchen 🍔💙

Nokwanda Smamani understood from the beginning that the YamiMine programme would only run for 10 months. She knew she needed to build a business that could sustain her long after the programme ended.

This is how her business was born: she rented a small space while she saved for stock, growing it into a fully functioning business. Every single day, she sets aside R150 for stock. Every single day, someone comes back to buy.

Her next step is to purchase a gas griller, which will enable her to serve her customers more efficiently and reduce waiting times.

This week we at YamiMine joined the Ministerial Engagement on Red Tape Reduction and Ease of Doing Business 🇿🇦, part of the Ministerial Outreach Programme hosted by the Department of Small Business Development with the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality.
The conversation centred on cutting red tape for small businesses 📋, from licensing turnaround times to informal trading permits and faster supplier payments. YamiMine was represented by CEO Fundi Madlala and CFO Mpume Madlala, alongside Minister of Small Business Development Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams and other stakeholders working toward a better environment for entrepreneurship and inclusive growth. 🩵
