Applying Leadership with Care – A Message from the CEO of Apex Leadership Africa
As leaders, we often find ourselves in positions of authority, making decisions and setting directions. However, Simon Sinek’s quote, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge,” reminds us of the core essence of true leadership, service and care.
In our South African context, this resonates deeply. We are a nation shaped by ubuntu, the belief in the interconnectedness of people. As leaders, it is our responsibility to embody this principle by prioritising the well-being and development of those we lead.
In practice, this means taking the time to truly understand your team. It means listening to their concerns, recognising their unique talents, and creating an environment where they feel valued and supported. Care is not just a soft skill...it’s a powerful leadership strategy that builds trust, loyalty, and productivity.
For example, imagine a manager in a fast-paced corporate setting. Instead of focusing solely on hitting targets, this leader could regularly check in with their team, ensuring that workloads are manageable and providing resources for growth. In doing so, they demonstrate care, not only for the individual but also for the collective success of the organisation.
At Apex Leadership Africa, we challenge leaders to redefine success by the impact they have on their teams. When you lead with care, you inspire your team to bring their best selves to work every day, driving both individual and collective achievements.
South Africa needs leaders who don’t just command but inspire. Let’s rise to the challenge and lead with care in everything we do.
