Cementation Africa

Cementation Africa Cementation Africa. Leading underground mining contractor. Shaft sinking, mine development, stoping, engineering design & support & accredited training.

With 50 years’ experience, we deliver safe efficient innovative mining solutions across Africa. Cementation Africa is one of the continent’s most respected underground mining contractors. Established 21 years ago through the merger of Murray & Roberts RUC and The Cementation Company (Africa), we earned our reputation under the Murray & Roberts Cementation name, delivering technical excellence, inn

ovative solutions and an unwavering commitment to safety and value creation. Our 21st anniversary in 2025 marked a bold new chapter. On 1 July 2025, we became Cementation Africa following our acquisition by a consortium led by Differential Capital. While our name changed, the trusted people behind our success, our core purpose and our proven performance all remain unchanged. We continue to uphold the high standards that have made us a partner of choice in the mining sector. Cementation Africa delivers the full spectrum of underground mine development services. This includes shaft sinking (both vertical and decline), shaft equipping, rehabilitation and refurbishment, development, underground chamber excavation and support, infrastructure and equipment installation, contract mining, raise drilling, water sealing and grout plant operation. Our engineering capabilities span the design and implementation of shaft infrastructure, detailed mine planning, execution and feasibility studies and the digitisation of underground maintenance systems operations. We apply tailored solutions across mechanised mining methods, ensuring optimal productivity and safety outcomes. Every solution is engineered to align with the specific needs of each unique mining project. To support skills development in the sector, we are proud to operate our own accredited Training Academy – the only one of its kind in South Africa. This world class facility plays a critical role in developing future mining professionals, enhancing operational readiness and embedding a culture of safety excellence across the underground mining industry.

Sustainable mining is increasingly about extending asset life through smarter technically advanced solutions. The launch of Tharisa’s underground mining phase is a strong example of this approach in action, securing future chrome and PGM output from the Bushveld Complex. Cementation Africa is proud to be the underground development partner on this significant journey.

Cementation Africa is entering a powerful new phase of growth. Our ownership transition has created the opportunity to sharpen our focus, strengthen our position as a leading underground mining contractor, and build for the future at a time when mining capital investment is gaining momentum.

From retaining critical skills and assets through the transition, to expanding our footprint across South Africa, Zambia and Ghana, Cementation Africa is positioning itself for long-term growth across the continent. With active projects at Tharisa Minerals and Mopani Copper Mine, continued investment in our training academy, expansion in raise boring, and a clear commitment to technology, automation, safety and engineering excellence, the message is clear: Cementation Africa is here to stay.

As our Managing Director Japie du Plessis shared, we are constantly evolving to improve efficiency, safety and operational performance, while pushing towards the future of autonomous and remote mining operations.

We are pleased to be part of a significant step forward in South Africa’s mining sector, as Tharisa has awarded us a five-year contract for underground mining development and construction at its chrome and PGM operation near Rustenburg.

This agreement reflects a collaborative alliance contracting model that aligns our interests with Tharisa’s long-term vision, supporting a transition to underground operations that will unlock deeper orebodies and extend the life of the mine. With development already underway following the first blast, we are focused on delivering safe, efficient and technically robust solutions that support sustained production and multi-generational value.
