THE BEAUTY OF THE AFRICAN GEMSTONE: ACHROITE TOURMALINE 🧊

❗ Over the coming months, we will be delving into the kaleidoscopic gemstone that is tourmaline and divulging its most interesting varieties.

◽The typical geological environments in which tourmaline grows are often rich in many different elements.

◽In many cases, these elements act as chromophores, i.e. create colour. But in rare cases, tourmalines may have such a low level of these colour-causing elements meaning they are generally considered colourless.

◽The colourless variety of tourmaline is termed "achroite".

◽In reality, most tourmalines sold as achroite have a pale hue; the truly colourless stones garner the highest prices.

◽Namibia and Madagascar are the primary sources of African achroite, but specimens from Nigeria and Tanzania are also known.
