THE BEAUTY OF THE AFRICAN GEMSTONE: INDICOLITE TOURMALINE πŸͺ»

❗ Over the coming months, we will be delving into the kaleidoscopic gemstone that is tourmaline and divulging its most interesting varieties.

πŸ”Ή In allusion to its indigo blue colour, β€œindicolite” is the name given to the variety of tourmaline with a dark blue to greenish blue colour, caused by iron.

πŸ”Ή Sometimes spelled indigolite, the word indigo comes from the Greek β€œindikon” (ἰνδικόν) literally meaning β€œproduct from India”.

πŸ”Ή Fun fact: The name β€œIndia” comes from the name of the mighty Indus river.

πŸ”Ή Important African deposits include the DR Congo, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia and Nigeria.

THE BEAUTY OF THE AFRICAN GEMSTONE: RUBELLITE TOURMALINE πŸ”΄

❗ Over the coming months, we will be delving into the kaleidoscopic gemstone that is tourmaline and divulging its most interesting varieties.

β• Tourmaline's name is derived from the Sinhala word "toramalli" which means "mixed gems" in allusion to parcels of waterworn gems sourced from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) by the Dutch in the early 18th Century.

β• Tourmaline has been treasured for both aesthetic and practical purposes for centuries, including as s***f bottles by the Chinese, navigational tools by the Vikings and smoking pipe ash-removers by the Dutch.

β• Tourmalines from Madagascar were even used as pressure gauges for submarines in WWI.

β• While there are currently over 40 tourmaline species approved by the IMA, the gem industry general settles for just "tourmaline" due to the complexity of their makeup. However, several varieties do exist that have commercial and collector importance.

β•Today, we are looking at Rubellite Tourmaline.
