We are sad to say goodbye to a valued colleague, mentor and friend as Edward embarks on an exciting new journey as the Acting Municipal Manager of Overstrand Municipality.
Over the past four years, Edward has made an exceptional contribution to Ignite. His expertise has been instrumental in strengthening our Talent Management products and solutions, while his genuine care for people helped shape the supportive and collaborative culture that defines our team.
Edward is widely respected in local government as a local government expert, recognised for his strong views, his commitment to good governance and his unwavering passion for building the capacity of public officials. Professionalisation is not about changing people. It is about changing the way municipalities build capability.

Too often, professionalisation is viewed as another HR initiative or another compliance exercise. It isn’t.

Professionalisation is a fundamental reform of how municipalities recruit, develop, manage and retain people to build capable institutions that consistently deliver quality services.

It means moving:

- From qualifications to include demonstrated competence.
- From once-off training to continuous professional development.
- ⁠From annual performance reviews to continuous performance improvement.
- ⁠From intuition to data-driven decision-making.
- ⁠From organisational silos to integrated workforce planning.

My view of the six interconnected building blocks:
• Professional Appointments
• Competency Assessments
• Municipal Optimisation Programme (Data Analytics, Benchmarking & Efficiency Improvement)
• Regulation 890 Implementation
• Performance Management, Monitoring & Evaluation
• Ethics & Accountability

Professionalisation should never be measured by the number of policies written, workshops held or clean audits obtained. It should be measured by whether municipalities become more capable, more ethical, more efficient and ultimately deliver better services to the communities they serve.

Professionalisation is not the destination, it is the vehicle that enables municipalities to fulfil their constitutional mandate. I am just putting it out there.
