First Potato Dynamics

First Potato Dynamics We are an innovative multifunctional group representing all divisions of the potato activity chain ?

The FPD Group specialises in the development and commercialisation of potato varieties that have Plant Breeders Protection (PBR Varieties) in terms of the international UPOV Convention. This means that the seed of the specific varieties can only be produced and sold in countries which are signatories to the UPOV Convention and with the consent of the breeding entities and royalties must be paid to

the breeders on every unit of seed sold. PBR is therefore just the "plant" equivalent of Intellectual Property Rights. PBR on a given cultivar is valid for a period of twenty years from the date that the first seed of that cultivar is sold in any UPOV country. South Africa is a UPOV signatory and we have a substantial number of varieties from overseas breeding entities registered under PBR. Breeding entities can either commercialize PBR varieties themselves or they can appoint agents to do so on their behalf. FPD Holdings is the South African agent for two major Dutch Breeding Houses, namely Agrico and Meijer and also represent the breeding programs of countries such as Israel and New Zealand. Historically FPD’s focus was on the processing industry which is a very rapidly growing market in South Africa. Having established dominance in this market we FPD is now actively looking for PBR varieties which can give the company a strong position in the table market.

Gourmandine is awarded the prestigious French quality award “ Saveur de l’Annee 2013”

(Taste of the year 2013) for the third time. In the category potatoes, fruit and vegetables, French consumers again considered Gourmandine to be the tastiest potato.
The culinary variety also received the honour in 2009 and 2012.
The “ Saveur de l’Annee” is an independent prize awarded each year in France to products with the highest level of quality. It is an exceptional and trend setting award.
Gourmandine is assessed on the basis of 4 criteria, i.e. appearance, aroma, texture and taste and is given a general assessment.
“ A potato with a firm structure, but one that melts on the tongue nevertheless”, “ A deliciously full nut-like flavour”, An excellent natural flavour”, were qualifications that the participating consumers ascribed to the culinary potato variety.

New spud chips away at diabetes.
Almera. This healthier variety of potato is taking the Australian and South African market by storm. Unlike most spuds, Almera is suitable for people who are diabetic or striving to maintain a healthy weight. Graham Liney, who lives about two hours from Canberra, in Laggan, brought Almera to Australia for Dutch potato cooperative Agrico.
He said it was unique. "Once you have diabetes you're told you cannot eat potatoes because most potatoes are high-GI [glycaemic index]," he said. "Almera is unique and someone with diabetes type2 can eat 150-200g per serve ... because it won't push their blood sugar levels up

FIANNA

This Dutch bred potato was introduced into the SA market as a specialty fry variety, until it was discovered by chefs who today refer to it as the ‘Chef’s preferred variety’ due to its versatility. It has a floury white flesh, smooth cream skin and longish oval shape with very few shallow eyes. It is perfect for home fries due to the fact that it does not absorb a lot of oil / fat.

Ideally used for: Chips, mashing and roasting
