The Nostalgia Generation

Let’s be real (as always) for a second……

When you listen to a track from the 60s, 70s, or 80s, you can almost feel the cultural shift. Each decade had a signature sound — a raw, new energy that felt like it was being invented on the spot. Disco exploded from the underground. Punk ripped up the rulebook. Hip-hop gave a microphone to the unheard.

Something feels different now. Right?

It’s not that the music is worse. It’s that the creative engine has fundamentally changed. A huge part of modern music is not about inventing a new wheel — it’s about putting the classic wheels in a microwave, hitting remix, and serving up a fresh, warm dose of familiarity.

We are living in the age of the sonic heirloom

Think about it. Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode” is built on a sample from the 1967 track called “The Edge” by David McCallum. Eminem’s song “Houdini” samples the 1982 hit song “Abracadabra” by the Steve Miller Band. Taylor Swift masterfully weaves nostalgic Sonics and lyrical callbacks into her eras, and Blink-182’s pop-punk anthem “All The Small Things” is a direct homage to the punk and new wave structures that came before it.

This is not a criticism. It’s a cultural observation. It’s how the game is played now, and it requires a deep kind of creativity — the art of curation, re-contextualization, and emotional resonance.

The magic lies in the fact that the average listener might not even know it. Unless you have a unique ear or grew up immersed in music history, that new, chart-topping hit feels brand new. You are dancing to a rhythm your parents might have fallen in love to, without even realizing it. The sample is the secret handshake between the past and the present.

So, what’s driving this?

In a word: Nostalgia

In our fast-paced, often overwhelming modern era, nostalgia is a billion-dollar comfort food. It’s a safe harbor. It’s in high demand. Fans don’t just want a new song; they want a feeling they already know and love, repackaged for today. They want a sentimental longing for the past, characterized by a wistful and often bittersweet feeling of affection for past times, places, or experiences.

This is not happening by accident. It’s being built by design. Producers and artists are cultural archaeologists, digging through the crates of music history to find that perfect, emotionally-charged loop or melody that will trigger a sense of warmth and belonging in the modern era.

The goal is not just to sell a song. It’s to sell a memory — that is good business.

So the next time you stream a new release and it gives you a strange sense of déjà vu, lean into it. You are not just listening to music. You are experiencing a conversation across generations — a brilliant, creative remix of our collective soul.

Still Chasing a 360 Record Deal? Let’s Talk…

So you are still dreaming of signing that record deal? Cool. But let’s break down what that actually means in 2025.

You sign a deal — that is the exciting part. Cameras flash, papers are signed, advance paid, and maybe even a post goes viral.

But behind the scenes, here is the real structure:

The label spends money on you. Studio time, marketing, production, maybe even a stylist. And then? You owe them. Every single dollar you make from that moment goes toward repaying that debt.

Here is the twist — while you are working off that tab, they own your music. They control your image. They guide your career and often not in the direction you would have taken.

So before you chase that 360 “dream,” ask yourself:

Do you want to own your journey or owe for it?

Let’s talk market share in music — not in a corporate boardroom way, but real talk for artists and indie teams grinding every day.

As indie artists and labels, we often have to invest way more upfront from our own pocket, especially when it comes to marketing. Why? If you want to claim and keep a piece of that market share, you need leverage. That means marketing budgets, brand building, digital strategy, collaboration - all the stuff big labels usually cover - we are doing it ourselves, and that grind towards market share builds growth.

At the end of the day, it's not just about beating the system - it's about building your own. More market share means more control, more longevity, and more impact.

Whether you are an artist, producer, manager, or just getting started, now is the time to take up space. There is room for all of us - but only if we show up smart, consistent, and unapologetically independent.

Let’s keep pushing!

For me, it all comes down to three things: adapt, learn, and grow exponentially!

And when I say exponentially, I mean breaking away from old systems, habits, and mindsets that no longer serve us.

We are living in a world that is changing faster than ever before - from how we create music, build human connections, and how we even define success.

The people and brands who thrive in this new world will be the ones who are agile enough to pivot, humble enough to keep learning, embrace technology, and bold enough to unlearn what is no longer working.

As an independent creative, holding on to outdated models is like trying to stream music on a broken cassette player. We need to be willing to evolve in our strategies, our tools, and, most importantly, our mindset.

Learning is not about formal education anymore - it is about being open. Open to feedback, open to self education, open to failing forward, open to trying something new even when the outcome is not guaranteed.

Growth - real growth - does not just mean more followers, more likes, more streams, or more money. It means expansion in the way you think, the way you lead, and the way you show up for your community.

It means creating structures that empower people who have never had access before.

That is the model I believe in - one that is rooted in purpose, driven by innovation, and shaped by a willingness to tear down what is outdated so we can build something that actually works. For ourselves. For others. For the culture.
