Drew Architects gets the opportunity to tailor a building to the people it is for, as well as to the site. They spend time intimately understanding the client, their passions, interests, hobbies, and how they live their life. The building ultimately comes from a deep understanding of the client and the site.
A high priority is given to connecting the building seamlessly with the environment. The design utilizes large panes of glass to connect people with the views and nature. The Icon system offers flexibility in the design, enabling walls to slide away into pockets and windows to open to allow a breeze.
The design incorporates warm, natural materials such as beautiful timber slats and natural stone throughout the home. Connecting to the landscape and responding to the South African climate and lifestyle is a big part of what makes a building South African. This allows the residents to enjoy an open-door, South African "holiday lifestyle" at home.
The owner of Drew Architects, Andrew Payne, finds it magical to return to a building and see the ideas brought to life, describing the process as "unbelievable and rewarding".
