The Pacific just hit +3.3°C in the Niño 3.4 region. 🌍

Since 1900, 8 of southern Africa’s 10 strongest droughts have come in El Niño years. In 2015, South Africa got just 403 mm of rain, its driest year since 1904.

NOAA gives an 83% chance this becomes a historic El Niño, and the SA Weather Service expects a hot, dry summer. Dams are fuller after a wet season, but that’s a buffer, not immunity.

A 200 m² roof can still catch about 64,000 litres in a 403 mm year. Store it before the dry season. 💧

🌡️ El Niño is getting stronger, and South Africa is in its path.

The latest NOAA update puts the Pacific at +2.1°C above normal, with an 83% chance of a historic-strength El Niño from October to December.

Here’s what SAWS expects for South Africa:
☀️ Above-normal heat, peaking around Dec–Jan
🌧️ Below-normal rainfall
💧 Gauteng and eThekwini at high risk of water supply disruptions

Our dams are around 90% full for now, but South Africans use about 250 L of water per person per day, well above the global average of 173 L. A hot, dry summer can drain that fast.

🌡️ EL NIÑO WATCH: The heat is on this week.

Mbombela is heading for 39°C, Pretoria 35°C and Polokwane 34°C. SAWS has flagged extremely high fire danger across northern KZN, the eastern Free State, North West, northern Gauteng and Limpopo, plus Yellow Level 2 storm and wind warnings for KZN.

And this is only the start. A strong El Niño is expected through summer 2026/27, with below-normal rain in many areas. The Free State, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo are most at risk.

Our dams are full for now, but farms, businesses and communities that rely on rain need a plan.
