Before reading this depressing negative conditions about our water, first know that high quality life giving water is available, but not enough for the whole of SA. Most of these unwanted bad elements discovered is almost unremovable by any purifying process in the world. Alive water become dead and may the majority contaminants be filtered out, but not poisons, toxins, pharmaceutical products, FSAF, endocrene disrupters, pestisides and agricultural chemicals................................................................

South African Water Contamination in rivers, dams, reservoirs, underground sources:

Recent South African research shows that rivers, dams, wastewater and other aquatic environments are carrying a complex mixture of conventional pollutants and newer “emerging contaminants.” The most recent national review, published in March 2026, concludes that pesticide and pharmaceutical pollution presents environmental and public-health concerns, while monitoring remains incomplete.
Where is the problem most documented?
In all provinces in South Africa.
The Most Important Summary (before you read further:
The emerging picture is not simply “dirty water.” South African water bodies can contain a chemical cocktail consisting of conventional pollutants together with trace pharmaceuticals, pesticides, industrial chemicals and persistent contaminants. Water-quality challenges now extend beyond bacteria, sewage and heavy metals to a newer generation of contaminants — pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, pesticides, endocrine-active chemicals, PFAS and complex mixtures.

South African Water Contamination
What has been detected
💊 Pharmaceuticals and medicines
• Acetaminophen/paracetamol
• Diclofenac
• Ibuprofen
• Naproxen
• Antibiotics
• Antiretroviral drugs, including efavirenz
• Antidepressants and other prescription medicines
• Caffeine and other biologically active substances
A 2026 study analysing South African rivers, dams and treated municipal wastewater detected pharmaceuticals, pesticides and licit/illicit recreational drugs.

🌾 Pesticides and agricultural chemicals

• pesticides
• herbicides
• fungicides
• metolachlor
• diquat
• nitrates from fertilizers
Examples:
• glyphosate
• atrazine
• organophosphates
Possible effects:
• hormone disruption
• neurological effects
• “blue baby syndrome” from high nitrates
• ecological damage
• Atrazine
• Endosulfan
• Chlorpyrifos
• Aldrin
• DDT and DDT breakdown products (DDE/DDD)
• Endrin
• Mirex
• p-chloroaniline
• Other organochlorine and pyrethroid pesticides
Some reported concentrations have exceeded international environmental-quality benchmarks.

☠️ Heavy metals and mining/industrial contaminants
South African water systems are also affected in different locations by:
• Arsenic
• Lead
• Mercury
• Cadmium
• Chromium
• Nickel
• Manganese
• Aluminium
• Iron
• Other metals associated with mining and industrial activity

🧪 PFAS and other persistent chemicals
PFAS (“forever chemicals”) are an increasingly important emerging concern in South Africa. Recent research has detected PFAS in South African aquatic environments, while separate modelling indicates substantial areas of the country may be vulnerable to PFAS contamination of groundwater. These substances are particularly concerning because many are extremely persistent and difficult to remove.

🧬 Endocrine-disrupting and biologically active chemicals
Research has identified pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other micropollutants capable of affecting aquatic organisms. Concerns include endocrine disruption, bioaccumulation, ecological toxicity and antimicrobial resistance.

🦠 Microbial and sewage pollution
Alongside chemical contamination, South African waterways continue to face substantial conventional pollution from:
• sewage and wastewater;
• pathogenic microorganisms;
• nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus;
• algal/cyanobacterial blooms and associated toxins;
• agricultural runoff.
