South African entrepreneur and Skinny Sbu Socks founder Sbusiso Ngwenya, a former Forbes 30 Under 30 recipient, has relocated to the United States of America to start his life afresh... A journey that has seen him transition from boardrooms to cleaning hotel rooms. 🥺
Sbu Ngwenya, who is also in the process of building South Africa’s first locally developed car, packed his bags a few months ago and moved to the US without a Concrete Plan and Little Money or Capital.
He's currently working as a Hotel Cleaner to earn a living, while using the rest of his time to equip himself with new skills and expose himself to new opportunities.
After attending his first Christmas party as an employee and Sbu shared that he values his salary deeply, describing it as “a Gift from God.”
Sbu Ngwenya insists that this phase of his life is not a downfall, despite working as a cleaner. He believes he is now exposed to bigger opportunities than he ever was, when in South Africa and is confident that greater things will emerge from this difficult season.
Ngwenya founded Skinny Sbu Socks in 2013, growing it into a nationally recognised brand stocked by Markham, Stuttafords, Capitec and sold in over 350 stores across South Africa.
He has previously been open about his struggles, appearing on SABC News during the companies difficult period, where he candidly said he did not need financial advice or solutions but instead a R5 Million CAPEX to save his ailing business.
Now based in San Francisco, Sbu Ngwenya’s story has sparked widespread discussion online, highlighting resilience, humility, and the reality that even celebrated entrepreneurs — including Forbes 30 Under 30 alumni — can face drastic life shifts while rebuilding their dreams.
