Know Your Duty: Reporting Corruption (Section 34 of PRECCA)
Did you know that South African law requires certain people to report corruption?
Under Section 34 of PRECCA:
• Who must report: People in positions of authority – like company directors, managers, CEOs, trustees, or government officials.
• What must be reported: Any corruption, fraud, theft, or forgery involving R100 000 or more.
• Where to report: Directly to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
• Penalty: Failing to report when required is a criminal offence.
Why it matters:
Reporting corruption protects your company, your community, and your country. It helps stop illegal activities and ensures accountability.
Important:
While ordinary citizens are not legally required to report under Section 34, you can and should report suspicious activity to authorities—it’s the right thing to do!
💡 Tip: If you’re in a position of authority and unsure, report early. It’s better to notify the authorities than risk legal trouble later.
