The Call: A commercial director reviewing supplier agreements ahead of the peak trading season found that rebate income recorded in the accounts was 40% lower than the rebates the signed contracts entitled the company to.

The Truth: A category buyer negotiated two sets of terms with four suppliers. The written contract recorded a lower rebate rate. The difference was paid to a marketing services company he owned, and the suppliers recorded those payments as promotional support. Nobody in finance had ever read the rebate clauses, because rebate income arrived as a credit and credits are rarely questioned. The arrangement ran across three peak trading seasons.

The Cost: R9.6 million in rebate income the company was entitled to and never received. R1.1 million in investigation and contract review costs. Four supplier agreements renegotiated and one terminated.

The Lesson: Rebates, settlement discounts and promotional allowances are negotiated by one person, recorded as income, and almost never audited against the contract that created them.

The Question: Does anyone in your business verify that rebate income received matches what your supplier contracts actually entitle you to?

Monday reality: you're about to waste three hours in meetings that could be emails. Before accepting another meeting this week, ask: can this be decided asynchronously? Most can. Meetings should be for debate, not information sharing.

For decisions, not updates. For solving, not reporting. Protect your calendar like it's under siege. Because it is.

Your time is the only resource you can't buy back.
