He is the grandson of former Minister of Foreign Affairs P*k Botha and the son of respected economist Dr Roelof Botha Sr.

How many of their cadre comrades were suspended with full salaries, benefits, and protection while ordinary citizens suffered the consequences of corruption, dishonesty, and abuse of power?

Many moons ago a South African domestic cricket competition proudly carried the slogan: “The boys are back in town.”

Well, thanks to the latest SAFA debacle, the boys are indeed back in town because they never even departed for Mexico yesterday due to visa complications involving players and members of the support staff.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that SAFA, under the leadership of Danny Jordaan, has embarrassed South African football and its loyal supporters on the international stage.

South Africans will remember the chaos surrounding Banyana Banyana in Morocco last year, where players reportedly refused to train amid salary disputes and administrative frustrations.

Instead of prioritising flashy send-offs, political grandstanding and photo opportunities, the focus should have been on ensuring that every logistical detail was finalised long before departure day. Proper planning, communication and accountability are the bare minimum at international level.

Now the Minister of Sport heads overseas alongside celebrities and invited guests to attend yet another major global sporting spectacle, while the national team’s preparations have once again been overshadowed by avoidable administrative failures.

Perhaps SAFA’s leadership should take notes from Mark Alexander and the SA Rugby administration. Back in 2018, Springbok rugby faced major sponsorship and branding challenges, yet through professionalism, stability and vision, SA Rugby rebuilt the brand into one of the proudest sporting products in South Africa today even surpassing Bafana Bafana in national support and commercial appeal.

Any organisation lacking world-class administration and leadership will ultimately suffer financially and reputationally.

You don’t plan to fail. You fail to plan.
