We, as passionate Springbok supporters, naturally focus on the scoreboard.

We celebrate the victories. We celebrate the back-to-back Rugby World Cups. We celebrate the unforgettable moments that have made the Springboks the most feared and respected force in world rugby.

But sometimes, we need to rewind.

𝗥𝗘𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟴
Springbok rugby was, quite frankly, like having a brother in jail. You loved him. You believed in him. But you didn't necessarily want to talk about him.

South African rugby was searching for direction, confidence and, most importantly, a way forward.

Then came a brave decision from SA Rugby leadership under President Mark Alexander a decision that would ultimately change the trajectory of South African rugby.

They turned to a former Springbok captain and brought in Rassie Erasmus to perform what can only be described as a rugby hospital job. The patient was seriously ill. The road to recovery was going to be long.

And nobody could have predicted just how extraordinary the rehabilitation would become. Today, we look at the Springbok machine and see two Rugby World Cup victories, a world-class coaching structure, commercial growth, global respect and a team that has transformed itself into one of the most successful sporting brands on the planet.

But success doesn't happen because of 23 players running onto a rugby field.

And that brings us to something that deserves recognition after the extraordinary Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour.

To Mark Alexander, Riaan Oberholzer, their leadership teams and the countless people working behind the scenes. Thank you.

Organising an international rugby tour of this magnitude is no small undertaking.

Travel. Accommodation. Security. Transport. Venues. Match-day operations. Media. Commercial obligations. Player welfare. Scheduling. Hospitality. Communications. Logistics.

And then there are the hundreds of tiny details that the public never sees but which can make or break a major sporting event.

𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗗𝗟𝗬 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗛 𝗔𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡. 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗦 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟱 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗛𝗟 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗨𝗠
Some moments become part of sporting folklore and some take to the skies.

The late Captain Laurie Kay of South African Airways was arguably ahead of his time when he performed that unforgettable flyover of Ellis Park ahead of the opening match of the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

Flying over a packed stadium in the heart of Johannesburg was no ordinary task. Ellis Park was surrounded by a densely built-up urban environment, leaving little room for error.

Captain Kay reportedly did his homework the old-fashioned way. First flying over Ellis Park in a small private aircraft to familiarise himself with the stadium, surrounding buildings and flight path before undertaking the iconic SAA flyover.

It became one of the most memorable images in South African sporting history.

Fast-forward 31 years and Saturday delivered another spectacular aviation moment this time over Cape Town's DHL Stadium, ahead of another Springboks–All Blacks blockbuster.

There has been some discussion about the altitude of Saturday's aircraft. But it is worth remembering that these are seasoned professional captains, operating within carefully calculated flight parameters and with a responsibility to account for the stadium, surrounding infrastructure, weather, aircraft performance and the planned flight path.

Just as Captain Laurie Kay prepared meticulously for Ellis Park in 1995, modern aviation operations are built around planning, calculation and precision.

And perhaps the most remarkable connection of all? 1995: The All Blacks.2026: The All Blacks.

In 1995, South Africa defeated New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup Final at Ellis Park to lift the William Webb Ellis Cup for the first time.

On Saturday, the All Blacks were once again the opposition and once again, the Springboks prevailed. For Pieter-Steph du Toit, it was an especially historic occasion as he earned his 100th Test appearance.

And there was another piece of history: the Springboks maintained their unbeaten record against the All Blacks at DHL Stadium.

From Captain Laurie Kay's aircraft soaring over Ellis Park in 1995 to Saturday's aircraft above the DHL Stadium, the message remains wonderfully South African: We don't just make history on the ground. Sometimes, we make it in the skies too.

29 May 2024 marked what many regarded as the beginning of the end of the ANC’s political dominance following the General Election results.

For a political movement accustomed to overwhelming electoral support, the message from South African voters was unmistakable: change was coming.

The arrogance that had characterised much of the political discourse suddenly gave way to a new reality. The familiar rhetoric of blame, Jan van Riebeeck, apartheid and the perpetual references to “The Struggle,” could no longer provide all the answers.

A new struggle had emerged: the struggle for political survival. And then came the skeletons. Allegations of corruption, maladministration, patronage and political intrigue began emerging from the cupboards, adding another layer to an already turbulent political landscape.

Now, with 4 November 2026 looming on the political calendar, the months ahead promise to be anything but dull.

Expect political reinvention, unlikely alliances, extraordinary explanations and enough twists and turns to fill the South African editions of Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter. The political theatre is entering another act.

South Africans would do well to watch closely, question everything and remember that political power is never guaranteed.

The electorate has the final word.

Have we at Swiss International Consulting perhaps missed the return of the Guptas to South Africa?

During the State Capture years, South Africans were repeatedly told by political leadership what needed to be done to “grow” the economy.

Fast-forward several years, and remarkably, the tune sounds very much the same.

The difference? Many of the so-called “new” economic ideas and talking points are precisely the issues that South Africa’s leading economists, business leaders and commentators have been highlighting for years.

South Africa does not need another chorus of political promises. It needs action, accountability, economic discipline and an environment in which businesses can actually grow and create jobs.

So, perhaps a tongue-in-cheek message to our political leadership: “Talk is cheap and the Guptas buy the whiskey.”

Particularly its claim that service delivery has improved since the 2021 Local Government Elections.

Dream on. South Africans living with failing infrastructure, unreliable services and struggling municipalities may find that narrative somewhat difficult to recognise.

As the saying goes: “It takes a fool to make a fool.”

Excellent news for the South African economy.

The U.S. Senate has voted overwhelmingly, 90–6, to approve a two-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), potentially extending duty-free trade access for South Africa and other eligible sub-Saharan African countries through 31 December 2028.

The extension is particularly significant for South Africa, providing greater certainty for exporters, investors and businesses operating within the U.S.–Africa trade relationship.

🇿🇦 What It Means for South Africa
• AGOA extended to 31 December 2028, subject to the remaining legislative process.
• 32 eligible sub-Saharan African countries would retain preferential access to the U.S. market.
• More than 1,800 products could continue benefiting from duty-free access, including agricultural products, vehicles and textiles.
• The legislation also includes provisions aimed at strengthening critical-minerals supply chains, creating potential opportunities for African producers and investors.
• Most importantly, the extension provides much-needed trade certainty at a time when South African exporters and businesses are navigating an increasingly competitive global economy.

🇺🇸 The Process Is Not Yet Complete
The Senate vote is an important step, but the legislation must still receive concurrence in the U.S. House of Representatives before being sent to President Donald Trump for signature.

For South Africa, however, the Senate vote represents a significant positive development.
Trade certainty means investment certainty and investment means jobs, growth and opportunity.

At Swiss International Management Consulting, we have been waiting for the inevitable pre-school politics to rear its head as South Africa heads towards the November Municipal Elections.

It has become a familiar political pattern: whenever the former ruling party finds itself backed into a corner, the response appears to be the same old blame, shame and political nursery rhyme sometimes accompanied by the race card.

The ANC is now calling for single-party control of municipalities, blaming coalition governments for years of worsening service delivery in Johannesburg, eThekwini and Buffalo City.

But perhaps South Africans should be asking a more fundamental question: why does the ANC so desperately want sole control again?

After years of allegations surrounding corruption, maladministration, patronage and the misuse of public resources, South Africans have every right to demand accountability, transparency and competent governance not another political blame game.

The ANC should perhaps spend less time preparing its political nursery rhymes and more time preparing for the verdict of the electorate.

In 2024, South Africa delivered a political wake-up call at the National Elections.

In 2026, the Municipal Elections may deliver another. History has a habit of repeating itself.

And if the electorate decides that enough is enough, the ANC may discover that its political funeral arrangements were made by the voters not its opponents.

The ballot box, not political rhetoric, will have the final word.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the newly launched Electronic Technology Authorisation will help alleviate South Africa’s unemployment crisis.

But South Africans have heard the promises before. Talk is and remains cheap.
