Here are Four numbers worth two minutes of your time.

485 000 — South Africans over the age of 25 who pass away each year.
85 000 — deceased estates actually registered with the Department of Justice.
25 000 — estates with a valid will in place.

September is National Wills Month, and those figures are the reason it exists. Most people know they need a will. Very few have one that is valid and current.
What happens when there isn't one
Your estate is distributed according to the law rather than your wishes. An unmarried partner can be left with nothing. A child's inheritance can end up in the Government Guardian's Fund instead of a trust you designed for them. You lose the right to nominate a guardian for your minor children. Families argue. The process can take years, with the State effectively in control because no professional executor was appointed.
We see this regularly. Losing someone is hard enough; sorting out an estate with no instructions makes it far worse.
What we can do about it
A will is not a complicated document to put in place — it is simply one that too many people postpone. And if you already have one, it is worth checking: a marriage, a divorce, a new child or grandchild, or a new property can quietly make an old will unsuitable.
