Good morning,
Well Covid restrictions are over for the time being and most businesses breathed a sigh of relief, but facing us is possible stage 6 power cuts. This more than Covid has the potential to destroy small amd medium businesses. Most of these businesses do not have the capital to invest in alternative sources of power(generators and or solar) but still are expected to continue paying rent and wages. I submit that this might be a step to far for some and with an unemoloyment rate above 30% we will face retrenchments and liquidations. It is completely unbelievable that after 26 years of democracy the current government has magaged to destroy Eskom and other state enterprises, and bring them to the point of collapse. We see talk shops called commision of enquires which in themselves highlight the problems and offer solutions, but see no political will to change the current setup. Unless the leadership of our country begins to take notice of what is happing and takes immediate urgent changes we as a country will continue to bleed work oportunities while also frightning away investment. there is however always oportunity for in every situation for those than can think out of the box for possible solutions. We have come to thr point were we cannot rely on government to provide what they were mandated to provide and if we wnat to survive we have to start looking at industry to take over what the government cannot do. A good example of this is a company thatrents out your rooftop to install solar panels and allows you to buy electricity that is generated while selling the surplus back to the municipality. There needs to be more inovative approaches taken by private enterprise as in the short term I see not immediate solution to the communities basic needs and if we do not solve these problems we will civil unrest which is not good for business. This is something we cannot shy away from but need to factor into our thinking. Time for private sector to come together regionally and put our thinking caps on.

In hindsight COVID and the way governments arround the world have handled the outbreak have had devastating impacts on peoples lives. I think of those who have died and their families, those because of full hospitals have died from other causes because they have been unable to be treated. The devastation of the lost emoloyment because businesses have not been able to survive lockdown as evidenced by our growing unemployment figures. The youth who are probably never going to be able to enjoy the benifits that work brings and the impact this is going to have on our country in the future. The steady exodus of skilled labour leaving for greener pastures and I could go on. The bigest worry that most countries are facing is the growing revolt against vacines and continued lockdown rules. People seem to care more about their personal freedom than those arround them and are becoming more intolent of politicians that seem to have no idea what to do. The red list in the UK for travel is just one of the knee jerk reactions and not based on any facts. Is it not ironic that France is restricting travel on the UK? I believe the social impact of COVID and the rules pertaing to it is going to have the bigest on society going forward as people become more reliant on social media with all the fake news that is being put out there and the attitude of me first. We are fast becoming an uncaring society that believes that rules are not for us, and are only put in place by politicians who seem to have lost contact with reality. What the future holds is up to us, we can decide to make choices to be positive or negative about life. We can start with the choice to wake up to a new day, be happy and make the most of the day that has been given us. We can stop critising eveything and everbody arround us and just maybe, with a few kind words encourage those arround us that are struggling with life. We have the power to change our own outlook on life and those we come into contact with.

Covid has impacted on all of us. It might have been financially and our businesses might have suffered, however the biggest impact has been on people. All of us know of people that have had Covid and some have died before their time. We have all reached the stage of wishing it was all over and maybe relaxed our attitude to meetings and the wearing of masks, the washing of hands. It is not the time to give up, it is the time to renew our determination to hold on, on to fight for our survival of our businesses our friends and family. The authorities and those in charge cannot change anything, it is all up to us, so take heart do not give up, things will change, things will improve, If you are struggling reach out to family and friends for support or if it is your business talk to some one that could be of help. Tomorrow is a new day live in the present for we cannot change the past and we have no control over tomorrow we can only use the here and now so do not waste the time you have been given.

If anyone in government thought that level one was going to restore all the jobs lost during the pandemic as well as the many small businesses that have closed their door for good they have made a serious mistake. It is going to take private investment not government to restore confidence and get the economy moving. Sadly our current government cannot or will not act against corruption and we have seen this on a massive scale in the PPE tenders. There has been not one prosecution only suspensions of some officials and I think this is to buy time so the voting public will forget about them so they can be reinstated. A good example of how government should act is given by major retailers cancelling their orders with a bottled water company on accusations leveled forcing the company to act and either clear its name or suffer the consequences. Innocent until proved guilty clearly does not work in this country and the years wasted in our courts as one decision is challenged after another. Leave to appeal should not be granted id the Judge deems that the person is guilty, perhaps just a review on the verdict by another Judge is all that is needed.

In the middle of a pandemic the amount of comments on the banning of alcohol and to***co and the anger that has been generated speaks volumes about the state of our nation. People are starving, people have lost their jobs never to be re-employed as so many small enterprises will not reopen after the lock down. The countries economy is in recession and there are so many other things we should be concerned about and yet alcohol and to***co are foremost in many peoples minds. What have we become, a nation of addicts? I hope we can look beyond the existing situation and be ready to take advantage of the many new opportunities that will present themselves as our lock down is lifted and not go back to the past. It is a chance to start over by evaluating our current way of life and how we would want to work and play in the future. Now is the time for change take it with both hands and embrace the future..

The end of the year is upon us, we have experienced all the ups and downs of life as well as the challenges of managing our businesses and survived. Life is more than survival it should be filled with joy and thankfulness and our businesses should be more than something to fill our days. It is time to take stock of how we are living our lives and managing our businesses and if we have been disappointed in this past year it is time to act make changes and look to the future with excitement and joy.

Do not get caught up in the downturn in the economy, but rather look to what you can change within your business to survive and prosper. My client has just reported the best ever October month results in 4 years by adapting to the changing circumstances and remodeling their business to take advantage of the gaps in the market. If your business is struggling sit down with an open mind with an outsider and see what can be changed and improved upon. Do not throw any crazy ideas away and evaluate every suggestion made. You will be surprised what you can change or modify on how you conduct your business.

23/10/2019

It is easy to despondent when we look at the state of our country and the economy and it seems that our leaders do nothing but talk or start another commission to investigate something else. What happened to reporting a crime to the police and they would investigate and then lay charges against the individual or company. Maybe this is not how things work but would it not be wonderful if it did. Having said this it easy to miss the fantastic opportunities that are there especially in the business community. The wheel always turns and sometimes we have to hit rock bottom before having the courage to take a risk and reach out to people and grasp the opportunities that exist. The only constant in our lives is change and if we will not embrace change we will be left behind bemoaning the good old days, irrespective of our age or circumstances be aware the sun will rise tomorrow and we should be excited about what the new day will bring.

21/09/2019

Times are tough for small businesses and many are closing their doors. We need to go into survival mode and cut costs where we can. Having said this we need at the same time plan ahead for the upswing in the economy which will happen, and there are small indications that this is already happening. This will enable us to forge ahead and take advantage when the change in the economy takes place. We need to stay positive embrace change and move ahead.

6 Easy ways for business owners to free up time
Content provided by a guest contributor.
As business owners, we charge clients for services. But how many business owners puts a price tag on their time? This is not the per hour rate some of us charge clients. We’re talking about your time.
The answer to the question is “not many”, because we don’t necessarily think of our time in terms of Rands and cents. As a business owner, you should, though. Your time is never free and it is most certainly valuable.
To get a better return-on-investment, so to speak, it is necessary to cut time wasters. This will ensure that time is spent only on things that is indeed worth your valuable time.
Fire one difficult customer
We all have that one customer that’s more trouble than they’re worth. They’re high maintenance, despite not spending a lot of money. Their demands are a drain on your energy, as well as the staff and the company’s finances.
Fire this client without thinking about it twice. There is very little chance that this client’s attitude will change, so fire them. It will free up time, as well as resources that can be put to better use.
Employ interns
Don’t do the grunt work yourself. Employ one or two interns to get the admin and other day-to-day tasks done. An intern, for instance, can do deliveries or make phone calls.
Just do interns a favour too and still give them the opportunity to gain experience in their field of choice. Let a marketing student help out in the marketing department, let an accounting student help out in the salaries department, and so on.
Let’s not forget that your interns should also be remunerated fairly. A disgruntled intern could prove harmful to the business.
Review systems and processes
Just because something is done a certain way, doesn’t mean that it is the best or most efficient way of doing it. Set up a meeting with each department in the business to review the systems and processes used. Aim to eliminate at least one redundant system or process and do not replace it with a new one.
Stop multi-tasking
Many of us think of ourselves as productive when we multi-task. This is not true, though. Jumping from one task to another forces your brain to make a multitude of decisions at once, which result in tasks taking longer to complete. Instead, concentrate on task at time.
To break the habit of multi-tasking, decide on set time frames during which you’ll respond to emails and take telephone calls. Furthermore, do work in chunks of time, like 25 minutes. This will force you to focus, making you more productive. It will also force you to take breaks, keeping your brain fresher for longer.
Automate recurring tasks
There is no need for you or anyone else in the business to devote hours each month to menial tasks. Instead, set up a debit order for that supplier that’s paid each month, automate salaries or set up a series of meetings for the monthly sales meeting. The gains here would be instantly.
Decide who will decide – then step back
Many business owners have a hard time letting go of tasks or micro-manage when they manage to let go. The fact is a lot of time is wasted like this. Rather sit down, make a list of all the most important decisions taken on a daily basis in each department and then assign the responsibility to someone.
Think about it – you hired each and every employee because you had faith in their abilities. Now show that you trust them. You only need to check in once a month, nothing more would be needed. Other than decide what you will use your newly gained free time, of course.

Elections just around the corner, the usual political empty promises, when will politicians realize the voting public are not stupid and anyone with a basic understanding of finance understands that all these promises cannot be funded by the mere collection of taxes and duties. Something needs to change but our politicians do not want to change only interested in securing power for the next 5 years. We also need to remember that their salaries are paid by the public and we need to hold them accountable

The do’s and don'ts of business expansion
Provided by Business Partners Ltd, South Africa's leading investor in SMEs
At one time or another, every business goes through a growth spurt and, whether it’s a multi-national corporation or an entrepreneurial enterprise, expansion is a tough process to navigate.
The real danger for any expanding business is that it does so too quickly or in an uncontrolled way. When this happens, cash flow and customer satisfaction are usually the first casualties and, in extreme circumstances, these can result in the demise of a once flourishing business. The trick is therefore to manage the growth process so you reap the benefits in the medium- and long-term.
Are there any rules to follow when facing a business expansion? Naturally, every business has its own challenges, so one can’t really set a generic set of rules for expansion. There are however, important things to bear in mind and some pitfalls to avoid so that everything goes smoothly.
Plan your expansion
It may seem obvious that any entrepreneur going through an expansion phase should do so with a game-plan, but many businesses expand in reaction to circumstances and don’t draw up a solid plan. Without this roadmap, it’s easy to get lost along the way, making changes to your business that are either too costly or not well thought out.
During the planning phase, ask yourself:
What is the real demand for your products or services right now?
What is the projected demand for them over the next two to five years?
How big do you need to grow in order to meet that demand?
How will changing competitor activity affect your business over the next two to five years?
What should your excess capacity for unusual demands be?
How many additional staff will be needed and when should they best be employed?
What's the best way phase in the expansion so cash flow isn’t compromised?
Where can you achieve economies of scale? In other words where will expanding capacity reduce the cost of sales?
Don’t over-expand
While planned expansion can take a business to a whole new level, over-expansion is one of the biggest dangers of a growth phase. It’s easy to get carried away in the heat of the moment and to expand beyond the needs and the financial capacity of the business.
As a rule of thumb, plan capacity based on a five-year projection of demand and allow an additional 10% of capacity over and above that for periods of heavy demand or for partial down-time in any part of your business. More than this could be very risky and leave a business with overheads it can’t cope with.
Remember, a business may go through several periods of expansion and it’s best to phase these according to demand. Don’t try to account for any and every eventuality during a specific expansion phase.
Get professional financial advice
Whatever the nature of your expansion, there are financial implications for the business and it’s always best to seek professional advice. If you need to build or purchase your own premises, for instance, it’s important to speak to a financial institution that has experience in this area.
For plant and equipment, you may need to consider a flexible financing option, either a loan or a combination of a loan and an equity investment. Again, an institution with experience in the field and in your own industry is essential.
Shop around
As a wise veteran of business once said, "Once the money’s spent, it’s spent – and there’s no going back". In the life of a business, a major expansion is a bit like buying a house or a car – one of the biggest financial commitments it will ever make.
This is the time to watch the rands and the cents. Decide on what you’re looking for - in terms of property, plant and equipment, office furniture, packaging and the like - and then shop around for the best quality at the best price. This can take a bit of time and attention, but it’s inevitably worth the effort.
Develop a Project Management Schedule for the expansion
Again, this may sound self-evident, but many businesses expand without treating the expansion like a project – one of the most significant it will ever undertake.
When drawing up a project management schedule:
Identify key deliverables
Attach dates to these deliverables
Identify key responsibilities
Set up a regular review schedule
Identify procedures for managing non-delivery on any part of the project
Build in appropriate timing and financial contingencies
Managing the process is as important as planning it and it’s important to commit to this in a formal way, building in the appropriate checks and balances.
Keep your customers informed
Expansion of any kind can cause disruptions in your day-to-day operations and it’s important that your customers know what to expect. Before commencing an expansion, tell them what you’re planning and what the expected completion date is. If possible, tell them what disruptions to expect and how you’re intending to deal with them.
Make your customers aware of the fact that the expansion will ultimately benefit them and explain how. Always reassure them that you have their interests at heart during the process. Direct mailers and on-site signage are two of the most effective ways of keeping customers informed during an expansion phase.
Announce the completion of your expansion
Once the expansion phase is complete, it’s important to let both existing and potential customers know about it. Tell them about the increased capacity of the business and the additional products and services you can offer. Develop a special marketing drive to announce the occasion and send out media releases, especially to the local and regional press.
Celebrate this moment in your business – it’s one of the best marketing opportunities you could ask for.
