As people on the margins, we do this to ourselves even when fighting for worthy causes; we reduce ourselves to the sum of our systemic misfortunes.

The Spin Cycle will never define domestic workers simply by their exposure to exploitation and harm, nor will it offer what we expect of them; to be the women with the juicy gossip about our neighbours, our leaders, and our society as a whole.

The Spin Cycle ensures that the stories we're naturally inclined not to say, are the stories that get told.

I have never in my life been present to such courage and pain! These women, telling their stories, which are the common stories of so many women in South Africa. A woman with a life sentence for killing her abusive husband, a survivor of the s*x slave trade, a daughter to a mother who was cut open and mutilated to death, a woman who was kidnapped by 3 men for 2 weeks when she was 14, several gang r**e survivors...

The demands of women are clear and poignant.
Let's not have these stories as a norm.

The Spin Cycle has been invited to the National Summit Against Gender Based-Violence and Femicide.

With the high percentage of domestic workers exposed to violence in both their workplaces and homes, it is important to ensure that their stories reach the national stage, so that we can find ways to restructure the systems designed to sustain their exposure to such violence, and then hold ourselves accountable as a nation to doing better!

The countdown has begun. See you there.
