MICHELANGELO PIETA

Inspired by Michelangelo’s breathtaking Pietà, this living sculpture pays tribute to one of the greatest masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.

Created by Michelangelo when he was just 23 years old, the Pietà depicts the Virgin Mary holding the body of Christ after the Crucifixion. Carved from a single block of Carrara marble in just nine months, it was commissioned for a tomb in St Peter’s Basilica, where it remains today.

In this final episode, Philip Jonker shares the inspiration behind Weltevrede’s living interpretation of Michelangelo’s Pietà and the story of how this powerful sculpture found its place among the Living Statues.
