The history of the farm dates back to 1890, when it was bought by the Nel family. The present owners and cellarmasters are brothers Boets (who qualified as a Cape Wine Master in 1997) and Stroebel Nel. Christoff de Wet was appointed as winemaker in October 2019. De Krans Wines is also known for their innovation and produces very interesting wines from unusual grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Verdelho. In addition, De Krans Wines produces an impressive range of excellent value wines from classic grape varieties. In 2012, De Krans Wines extended their range when they first produced the now popular Premium White Moscato Perlé, followed by the Premium Red Moscato Perlé in 2017. The latest edition to this range, the Premium Rosé Moscato was just released in March 2021. The Alcohol-Free Muscat Nectar Sparkling was also released in March 2020. De Krans Wines is a family friendly destination on the popular Route 62. Visit the tasting room where our entire range is available for tasting or stock up on some local products from our De Krans Deli. Enjoy the hospitality of our De Krans Bistro where you have the choice to sit outside under the vines. You can also enjoy a vineyard walk, play some outside chess or relax while your children enjoy the play gym. Be sure to visit us for our traditional fruit picking at De Krans in February (Hanepoot) and November (Apricots) – a fun-filled activity not to be missed. We are so excited to welcome you to the farm from 13-14 June 2026 for the Calitzdorp Expressed Festival. From music, trail running through the vineyards, cellar tours, to enjoying a wine tasting at the tasting room, there is something for everyone as we celebrate the beauty, hospitality and quality wines of Calitzdorp.

Please see our program below for Saturday 13 June and Sunday 14 June:

* Saturday 13 June *

• Expressed Trail Run – Enjoy a 5km, 10km, or 21km walk/run set against the stunning backdrop of the De Krans vineyards and along the Gamka river. Registration and late entries will take place from 7.30 – 9am. Beautiful finisher medals await all participants, with lots of wine prizes up for grabs. • Cellar Tours - Enjoy an exciting and insightful wine cellar tour with a wine tasting and food pairings presented by winemaker, Christoff de Wet.

Tour 1: starts at 10am (duration of 2 hours)
Tour 2: starts at 2pm (duration of 2 hours)

Tours are R250 per person with limited space available of 15 people per tour so be sure to book your spot as soon as possible.

• Enjoy live music by Thelma Heyns from 11am – 4pm

Our favourite thing about the De Krans Port-style wines (formally known as port prior to its name change in 2011) is probably its versatility when it comes to the when and how to enjoy it. With its naturally sweet taste, delicious fruit character and balanced acidity, this wine range is perfect for winter.

When looking for a lovely predrink or port to use as a cocktail, there is nothing better than the De Krans P&T (port-style and tonic) - a premixed white port and tonic with delicious citrus, pineapple and granadilla flavours. Additionally, try the delicious Cape Pink as a cocktail mixer - simply mix with soda or tonic, and voilà.

When it comes to cooking hearty dishes this winter, why not try the Premium Cape Ruby instead of a dry, red wine. The Cape Ruby port-style wine brings the added sweetness to the cooking, making meaty dishes like lamb shank, potjiekos or oxtail super tender and juicy.

The Cape Vintage pairs excellent with chocolate desserts like a brownie or chocolate fondant or even a steak with mushroom sauce. With a flavour profile of coffee, toffee, nuts and dried orange peel, the aged Cape Tawny pairs well with both savoury dishes (think butternut soup and baked camembert with rosemary and drizzled honey) and sweet dishes (think malva pudding, orange cake or crème brûlée). The options are truly endless. To end off the night, enjoy a glass of our flagship port-style wine, the Cape Vintage Reserve, with matured cheese.

So. Much. Water.
The month of May has been filled with storms, rain and wind. While we got most of our rain the first week in May, this past week's storm has left Calitzdorp without power since Monday. We are grateful for a generator (thanks loadshedding) and are praying that the town's electricity will be restored soon.

Farming is like constantly walking a tightrope. From the times of drought to times of flooding. It forces you to adapt, make plans and to let go. It takes away and it gives in abundance. It teaches humility, gratitude, community and respect for nature. Some days are easier than others.

We are incredibly thankful for plenty of water to sustain us (especially since we were nearing another drought in February before any rains), and that there was no flooding or any other major damage. We know other wineries and farms have not been so lucky and we keep them in our thoughts as they rebuild.
