This year has been a hard one for so many small businesses. Even with the challenges, they continue to show up for our communities in ways that go far beyond the products they sell. They create jobs for our neighbors, keep our local economy moving, and add the heart and character we can’t imagine our cities without. When you choose to shop local, you’re not just making a purchase. You’re helping a business stay open, a family stay hopeful, and a community stay strong. Your purchase truly makes a difference.

Lucinda Evans

a renowned South African women’s rights activist and feminist whose voice has become impossible to ignore in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide. Her fearless leadership has sparked nationwide marches, and she became one of the defining voices of the movement, delivering a powerful address outside South Africa’s Parliament that called the country—and its leaders—to urgent action.

Born in historic District Six and raised in Lavender Hill from the age of five, Lucinda grew up in a community where activism was not a family tradition. Yet, from these very streets, she rose to become one of the country’s most influential champions for women’s safety, dignity, and rights. Her journey is rooted in lived experience: the reality of witnessing violence, inequality, and hardship in her own community became the fire that shaped her calling.

Against the backdrop of a society grappling with systemic gender-based violence, Evans carved her own path, stepping into spaces where silence had become the norm and replacing it with bold, unwavering resistance. Her activism is not theoretical—it is grounded in the daily struggles of women and girls whose voices too often go unheard.

Today, Lucinda Evans stands as a symbol of courage and conviction. A community leader, mobiliser, and changemaker, she continues to fight for a South Africa where women are safe, empowered, and free. Her work reminds the nation that transformation begins when one person refuses to look away—and chooses instead to lead.
