‘For generations the Mwani Zanzibar Mamas - a collective of women - have practiced intergenerational seaweed farming on the island of Zanzibar. Guided by the rhythms of the moon and tides, they farm using ancestral knowledge, passed down from mother to daughter. This wisdom enables them to harness the seaweed’s natural benefits, including its use in traditional remedies and skin care.

They first came together as a collective to empower and grow their ability to support themselves resulting in economic independence and empowerment. At Mwani Zanzibar the women expand their skill set to not only farming seaweed, but to processing and producing skin care.

Their experiences and wisdom offer invaluable insights into sustainable living and environmental stewardship, illustrating the power of local conservation action and indigenous knowledge in the face of climate change. Their stories, derived from a lifetime spent in the sea, are critical to the climate change narrative.’

The Adderley Street Flower Market is an enduring living cultural landscape that embodies over 150 years of cultural continuity and resilience. Rooted in the histories of historically marginalised communities, the market reflects generations of livelihood, indigenous botanical knowledge, and intangible heritage. As a vibrant symbol of identity, belonging, and community agency, the market is an exceptional and irreplaceable part of Cape Town and the Western Cape’s cultural and social fabric.

THIS EXHIBITION IS A SIMPLE ACT OF AWARENENESS AND SUPPORT FOR THE ADDERLEY STREET FLOWER SELLERS OF CAPE TOWN, and their ongoing campaign for HERITAGE RECOGNITION and PROTECTION OF THEIR TRADING RIGHTS in Trafalgar Place.

The market is currently being affected by proposed changes to informal trading rules, which have raised public discussion about heritage status and the security of the sellers’ tenure.

The Association has submitted a petition to parliament rejecting the introduction of permit-based trading for this market. This petition supports fairness, dignity, and the protection of generational livelihoods.

The flower sellers are not ‘informal’. They are a part of Cape Town’s legacy,
and the market must be preserved as a living heritage, not reduced to a revocable permission.
