Essential for Survival

In my 20s, I entered the world of technical industries with no formal degree, and without science or maths in school. I started out in abrasives, pumps, spares, valves, and even sold industrial and specialty gases. What I did have was attitude—a hunger to learn, grow, and prove myself.

Eventually, I found my footing in truck-mounted hydraulic cranes, where I spent six incredible years. A wise mentor saw potential in me and took the time to guide me in a field that was, at the time, extremely male-dominated (circa 1996). I was a blonde, blue-eyed young woman in safety boots, working underground in mines and learning everything I could. I had to prove that I was more than my appearance. It wasn’t easy. The work was raw, the people were brutally honest, and the expectations were high. But I persisted—and I earned trust. The day I sold the largest truck-mounted crane in the Southern Hemisphere remains one of my proudest professional achievements.

Now, more than 25 years later, I find myself back where it all started—this time, helping my husband measure trucks for abnormal load permits. The boots are back on, the grit remains, and I still thrive on the honesty and diversity of the people I meet along the way.

🔧 Lessons learned:
- Attitude often matters more than credentials.
- Mentorship can change a life.
- You never truly leave the industries that shape you.

To anyone forging their path in a tough space: keep going. Your perseverance will speak louder than any stereotype.

Do it alone. Do it scared. Do it not knowing what the outcome will be.

When nobody else is willing to go with you, go alone.

You will miss out on a lifetime of opportunities if you keep waiting around for other people.

Doing things alone will help you grow in so many ways. You don’t need anyone else around you in order to grow and thrive.

So thrive on your own. Let people see you blossom on your own. 🌷
