In South Africa, the Protection of Personal Information Act (โPOPIAโ) was introduced to help regulate how personal information is collected, stored, processed, and shared. However, despite these protections, many individuals still unknowingly consent to extensive data collection every single day through app permissions, online purchases, loyalty programmes, website cookies, location tracking, and social media activity.
While technology and innovation bring enormous benefits, digital awareness has become equally important. Understanding what you agree to online, reviewing privacy settings, limiting unnecessary permissions, and remaining cautious about the information you share are becoming essential parts of modern life.
Convenience should never come at the cost of complete digital vulnerability.
