WASTE PICKERS ARE THE BACKBONE OF ZERO WASTE!

Today is International Waste Pickers Day and we stand in solidarity with our waste pickers who contribute so much to our communities.

They save cities millions of dollars in hauling fees alone and divert tonnes of waste from disposal, thus ensuring environmental health and public safety and reducing the impacts of climate change.

Unfortunately, their work is not considered legitimate labor and they receive neither the proper pay or benefits from the government. Instead, they are unrecognized, harassed, unsupported - and are left most vulnerable to the ravages of the climate crisis.

We wish to correct these injustices - and call on governments to provide social protection for waste pickers and their integration into solid waste management (SWM) systems for .
