A full bladder is like an inflated balloon. It can be an obstruction in the pelvic area, making it difficult for the baby to descend. Thus prolonging labour.

An empty bladder is like a deflated balloon, which makes it easy for the baby to pass it in the pelvic area.

Try to empty your bladder regularly. It can make a huge difference to the labour progression.

Staying in one position too long can result in slower dilation and even stall labour.

Change your position regularly. For example if you have been lying down for a while then try sitting up or walking for a few minutes. This helps with blood flow especially to the womb. This can help with dilation and speed up labour.

Sounds contradictory right? How do you begin to relax when you are experiencing so much pain?

Relaxation is a key ingredient in making labour contractions less painful. The are many techniques that can help you relax and dilate quicker.

Tensing up during labour can result in more painful contractions. This can prolong your labour, resulting in slower dilation and even complications that will need medical interventions.

Doulas are great at teaching relaxation techniques during labour.

Doulas have been helping women through time, Civlisations and cultures. Labouring women were almost always surrounded by women that would help them through the labour and birth.

The labouring mother was treated with the utmost dignity and care. A contrast to the undignified ways in which labouring women are treated at health care facilities today.

Doulas provide physical, Emotional and informational support to the labouring mother and her family. This can range from gentle massages to relaxation breathing to even just a word of encouragement and praise. These little acts can make a huge difference to a woman's birth experience.

Every women should have access to a doula. It should not be a luxury to the affluent only. In fact it is part of our heritage as women that has been lost, and rediscovered and should now become a necessity for every labouring mother.

The other day I had such an excruciating headache that I could not even sleep. I then did some deep breathing and the next thing I know, my headache dissipated.

Deep breathing transport nutrients and oxygen to all parts of your body as this helps it function effectively. This also helps you relax and stimulates the release of endorphins, which are the body's natural pain killers.

When we are in pain, we naturally tend to tense up to not feel the intensity of the pain. But little do we know that we are actually intensifying the pain. Whereas a calm and relaxed state actually helps combat the pain

The same happens when we are in labour. Deep breathing can help stimulate your nervous system to calm you down and relax.

When you are calm and relaxed, energy flows freely, endorphins are released and the contractions are less painful. Your body can function optimally to do what it needs to do, thereby reducing the risk of complications during labour.

There are various deep breathing techniques that you can try. Do what feels comfortable for you.

Remember:

-Tension intensifies pain

-Relaxation eases pain

Take time out each day to practice deep breathing not just for labour but for other aches ,pains and stresses and you will be in awe of your body's healing ability. Get in synch with your body.
