As times change , the paths to the upper end of your career ladder will always be paved in two pathways .Understanding these two lanes will help you navigate through company politics , decision making processes and get you where your growth potential is unlimited.

These two pathways will lead you , as the old saying goes . Where you hunt with the big dogs , and p*e in the tall grass .

1.) Espoused organisation:

Identified as go-getter recognition and development processes .These pathways are usually based on track record, personality and skills testing, boss recommendations and perceived potential to add value.

2.) Shadow organisation:

These pathways often take place informally through the “old boys or girls network” or some other set of conscious or unconscious hidden criteria in the culture.

5 Key questions to ask yourself and discover the pathway you're most likely to use on your way up :

1.) Which one of these, espoused or shadow paths is most powerful in your current organisation?

2.) How do people get noticed and tagged for promotion?

3.) What is the basis for advancement and how is it set?

4.) Are these advancement pathways consciously or unconsciously designed by the leadership?

5.) What's the difference between espoused criteria and the shadow criteria? Are they the same?

3 Simple ways to reinvent your career during tough times .
Even when you don’t know where to start .

Even if you could endure your mid-career dry spells , mounting evidence suggests that you would be better off adjusting course .Your next job might not be the one you’ve always had fantasies about .

Successful career shifts , from my experience ,tend to be less dramatic than the ones we day dream about .

They also tend to be scarier and more difficult than we anticipated .but if you want to thrive in the years ahead ,a new challenge and a new purpose ,may be the thing your mind needs most .

And despite the crisis the world is currently facing, there’s plenty you can be doing .Here are 3 ways you can start to take charge of your career , and start moving towards a more fulfilling path.

1⃣. Get Clear and go all in on your strengths

Focus on the things you can do .Update your CV, LinkedIn profile, reach out to your network ,or even learn new skills .Especially digital and managerial skills .This would be the perfect moment to put those long term ideas you’ve always imagined into action.

2⃣. Grow your Circle of Influence
- It’s easier to fold back and rely on your current network I.e, your close friends, relatives and workmates.
