🐂🧬 Day 1 of the Worldwide Wagyu Conference 2026!

We're thrilled to be attending the Worldwide Wagyu Conference 2026 right here in beautiful Stellenbosch!

It's a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow industry professionals, breeders and Wagyu enthusiasts from around the world, exchange ideas and celebrate the passion and innovation driving the Wagyu industry forward. We're incredibly grateful to be part of this exciting event and look forward to the conversations, connections and insights the next two days will bring!

👋 Attending the conference? Come say hello!

Whether you'd like to chat about DNA profiling, parentage verification, genetic testing, or have a few burning genetics questions you've been meaning to ask, we'd love to meet you!

🐂 Catch our Relationship Consultant, Heike, at the conference over the next two days!

See you there! 🧬❤️

🐄🧬 From DNA to Dinner Plate: Exploring the Beef Value Chain!

Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the LRF Stockman School at Aldam, where we had the opportunity to connect with fellow industry professionals, share knowledge and explore the important role genetics plays in modern beef production.

We were especially grateful for the opportunity to present on The Beef Value Chain: From DNA to Dinner Plate, highlighting how genetic information can support informed breeding decisions, reliable parentage verification and the development of productive, sustainable cattle herds. From understanding an animal's genetic potential to making decisions that influence the quality and efficiency of beef production, genetics forms an important part of the journey from farm to consumer. 🧬🥩

Events like these provide valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, learn from one another and strengthen connections across the livestock industry.

A sincere thank you to the LRF Stockman School organisers for the invitation, the warm hospitality and the opportunity to contribute to this year's programme.

We thoroughly enjoyed being part of the experience and look forward to continuing the conversations! 🐄❤️

Better information. Better breeding decisions. A stronger beef value chain.

🐦🧬 Something new is taking flight at Unistel…

Racing performance is complex. Training, health, nutrition, environment and experience all matter - but genetics can also contribute to the traits that help shape a racing pigeon.

And soon, we'll be able to explore more of that genetic picture. 👀

Our current racing trait testing includes:

🧬 DRD4
🧬 LDHA

But we're expanding our racing pigeon genetics offering with five additional tests coming soon:

🧬 CASK
🧬 CRY1
🧬 GSR
🧬 LRP8
🧬 FKER

Together, these markers investigate different biological traits that may be relevant to racing performance - giving breeders another piece of information to consider alongside pedigree, performance records and good breeding practices.

Because there is no single “champion gene.” 🏆

But understanding the genetics behind individual traits can help us build a more complete picture of the bird.

🐦 More genes. More information. More insight.

Coming soon to Unistel. 🧬

🐴🧬 Need to send your horse for DNA testing? Good news: collecting a sample is pretty simple!

For many of our equine DNA tests, all we need is a sample of mane or tail hair with the roots attached.

Here's how to collect it:

Select a small section of mane or tail hair close to the skin.

Pull the hairs firmly, do not cut them! We recommend collecting approximately 20–30 hairs to make sure there is sufficient material for testing.

Check the ends! You should be able to see the small roots attached to the hairs. These are important because they're where we obtain the DNA needed for testing.

Place the hairs into a clean, clearly labelled paper envelope and keep samples from different horses separate.

A few properly collected hairs can give us the DNA we need for genetic testing - no needles required. 🧬🐴

For breeders, an accurate pedigree is more than just a record – it's the foundation for informed breeding decisions.

While DNA testing provides reliable genetic information, accurate pedigree records add the family history needed to verify relationships and maintain confidence in your breeding programme.

Together, pedigrees and DNA testing can help:
🧬 Confirm parentage
🧬 Support informed breeding decisions
🧬 Maintain confidence in every generation

At Unistel, we're proud to partner with breeders by providing trusted DNA testing services that help protect the integrity of pedigree records.

Because good breeding starts with good records – and we're here to help every step of the way.

Did you know that the hair root is the most important part of a hair sample? 🐂🧬

When submitting hair samples for DNA testing, always pull hairs firmly from the tail switch so that the follicles (roots) remain attached. The DNA we need is found in the hair root - not in the hair shaft itself.

For the best chance of a successful test:
✅ Pull 20–30 hairs from the tail switch.
✅ Check that the hair roots are clearly visible.
✅ Keep the sample clean and dry.
✅ Label each sample carefully.

Avoid cutting hairs, collecting loose hairs from the ground, or touching the roots, as these can reduce DNA quality and may result in a repeat sample being required.

A few extra seconds during collection can save days of waiting later!

🐴 Muscle twitching, weakness or sudden collapse in horses? It could be genetic.

Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP) is an inherited muscle disorder caused by a mutation in the SCN4A gene. Affected horses may experience episodes of muscle twitching, weakness, prolapse of the third eyelid, or, in severe cases, collapse.

HYPP is most commonly seen in American Quarter Horses, but it can also occur in American Paint Horses, Appaloosas, and other breeds with Quarter Horse bloodlines.

A simple DNA test can identify whether a horse carries the HYPP mutation, providing valuable information for owners and breeders. Genetic testing supports informed breeding decisions and helps reduce the prevalence of this inherited condition in future generations.

🧬 Healthy breeding starts with informed decisions.
