๐ต๏ธโ๏ธ **SOLAR DETECTIVE โ CASE #8**
# # ๐ญ THE BUSINESS THAT NEVER SLEEPS!
Some businesses close at 5 PM.
This one doesn't even know what 5 PM means. ๐
Welcome to today's case!
# # # ๐ THE CASE FILE
Our customer runs a business operating **24 hours a day, 7 days a week**.
๐ญ Production equipment runs around the clock.
โ๏ธ Refrigeration must stay on.
๐ก Lighting is needed day and night.
โ๏ธ Machinery operates in shifts.
โก Interruptions can affect productivity.
๐ฐ Electricity is a major operating expense.
The owner wants solar to reduce grid consumption and improve energy resilience.
But there's a catchโฆ
# # # โ๏ธ THE SUN DOESN'T WORK NIGHT SHIFTS!
Solar production falls after sunset.
The business, however, keeps running.
So how should we approach this challenge?
# # # ๐ต๏ธ WHAT WOULD YOU INVESTIGATE FIRST?
๐
ฐ๏ธ **Install as many solar panels as possible.**
Generate as much energy as we can during daylight.
๐
ฑ๏ธ **Install a massive battery bank.**
Store enough energy to power the entire business overnight.
๐
ฒ๏ธ **Analyse the business's load profile and critical equipment.**
Understand daytime consumption, nighttime demand, peak loads and which equipment cannot stop.
๐
ณ๏ธ **Forget solar. A 24-hour business can't benefit from it.**
The sun goes down, so what's the point?
# # # ๐ค WHAT'S YOUR ANSWER?
Comment **A, B, C or D** below!
Let's see how our Solar Detectives think. ๐
# # # ๐ TODAY'S CLUE
A business that operates 24/7 doesn't necessarily need to run entirely on batteries at night.
The right approach starts with understanding its energy use.
We need to investigate:
๐ **Daytime versus nighttime consumption**
โก **Peak demand and equipment starting loads**
โ๏ธ **Available solar generation**
๐ **Battery requirements for critical loads**
๐ญ **Which processes must run continuously**
๐ฐ **The cost of electricity and the investment**
Depending on the business, solar may help offset daytime consumption while batteries support selected loads or provide backup.
The grid, where available, can also remain part of the energy strategy.
And for some operations, a carefully designed combination of solar, batteries and grid power can make more sense than trying to run everything from batteries.
# # # **THE BIG LESSON?**
Don't size a commercial solar system just by looking at the electricity bill.
**Understand the business first. Design the system second.**
Because a factory, cold-storage facility and office building can have very different energy requirementsโeven if their bills look similar.
# # # ๐ BUSINESS OWNERS:
If your business could reduce one electricity expense, which would you investigate first?
