Japan is well respected globally for innovative technology, but building new coal misses out on the opportunity to be innovative and negates efforts to lower emissions associated with the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. "Together the 22 [coal] power plants would emit almost as much carbon dioxide annually as all the passenger cars sold each year in the United States."

As many as 22 new coal plants—one of the dirtiest power sources—will arise at 17 sites across Japan, just as the world must slash emissions to fight warming.
