South African voices are helping shape how sustainable fishing is defined and practiced around the world 🌍🐟

At the start of the 2026 fishing year, Felix Ratheb, CEO of Sea Harvest, reflects on why showing up in global spaces really matters. Fisheries aren’t one-size-fits-all. They differ by region, species and governance and when well-managed fisheries aren’t represented, they risk being judged by the same standards as poorly regulated ones.

Global engagement is about bringing nuance, evidence and balance into the sustainability conversation and recognising that food production and environmental protection must work together, not against each other.

These global conversations also shine a light on challenges closer to home. Long-term investment in fleets and value-adding only makes sense when policies support long-term thinking. When governance timelines are shorter than investment cycles, opportunities slip away even when resources and markets are strong.
