Wednesday Evening Musing 💭

This morning, before the school run chaos, the meetings, the noise, I found myself reading Oh, The Places You’ll Go! with my babies.

I’ve read this book before, but today, for some reason a lot of this resonated with me. The one particular page said:

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

It’s such a simple line.

But it’s also a powerful reminder.

We’re halfway through the year.

Some of us are ahead of where we hoped to be.

Some of us are behind.

Some are celebrating big wins.

Others are quietly carrying disappointments that no one else sees.

Wherever you find yourself today, remember this:

The rest of the year hasn’t been written yet.

👉You can choose a different direction.
👉You can start the project.
👉You can repair the relationship.
👉You can look after your health.
👉You can ask for help.
👉You can change your mind.
👉You can begin again.

We spend so much time thinking our circumstances determine our future.

More often than not, it’s our 👏decisions👏 that do.

So, if the first half of the year hasn’t gone quite as planned…

Don’t dwell on the chapters already written.

Focus on the pages that are still blank.

👏Your 👏mountain👏 is 👏still 👏waiting.👏

Happy Wednesday. ✨

One year ago, our family started a tradition called First Friday.

On the first Friday of every month, one family hosts everyone else.

From 430-6 pm, phones disappear, wine is poured, children run around, and four generations gather around one table.

We’re not Jewish, but we’ve always admired the intentionality of Shabbat—the idea of creating space to pause. So we created our own version.

Before we toast, everyone shares two things:

✨ One thing they’re grateful for.
🥂 One thing they’re celebrating.

Everyone.

From the six-year-old to the eighty-six-year-old.

What has surprised me most over the past year isn’t the tradition itself.

It’s how rarely we stop to celebrate.

As adults, we achieve something... and immediately move on to the next goal.

Finish the project.
Start the next one.

Win the client/funding/sale.
Chase the next one.

Reach the milestone.
Raise the bar.

We spend so much of life climbing the mountain that we forget to turn around and admire the view.

As a CFO, I spend my days helping founders build profitable businesses.

But I’m becoming increasingly convinced that Whole Wealth isn’t just about creating moments you’ll be proud of one day. It’s about creating moments you’ll actually remember.

Sometimes the richest investment you’ll make all month is two hours around a table with the people you love.

This Friday, before you start chasing Monday’s goals...

Pause.

Celebrate something.

Be grateful for something.

Enjoy the glass of wine.

Because wealth isn’t only found in what’s sitting in your bank account.

Sometimes it’s sitting around your dining room table.

Happy First Friday. 🥂

The most valuable number in your business isn’t revenue.

It’s time!! 🕰️

As founders, we obsess over numbers.

➡️Revenue.
➡️Profit.
➡️Cashflow.
➡️Margins.

But the one number that quietly determines all the others is…

➡️Time.

How much of yours is spent:
• Chasing invoices?
• Processing paperwork?
• Fixing mistakes?
• (or my personal worst!) Doing work a system could do?

Every hour you spend working in your business is an hour you’re not spending working on it.

One of the biggest shifts I see when clients implement better financial systems isn’t just cleaner reporting.

It’s that they get their time back. ⏰

And when founders get their time back…

💪They make better decisions.
💪They become better leaders.
💪They build better businesses.

Your business should create freedom.

Not become another full-time job.

Question I asked myself for my quarterly review:

If I gave you an extra 10 hours every week…

What would you do with them? 🤯

How Much Should You Pay Yourself?

A year ago I wrote about company tax vs personal tax for South African business owners .... And here we are again.

Tax season. Deadlines. Provisional payments. Year-end clean-ups. Mind fried!

Right now, I am running this exact calculation over and over for founders/ SME business owners:
👉 How much should you move from your company to yourself?
👉 Salary vs dividend?
👉 Leave it in the business?

Let’s simplify it again:
💼 Company tax
Flat 27% on profit (unless you qualify as a small business corporation). You get taxed at the same rate no matter what the taxable income. 27%.

👤 Personal tax
Sliding scale from 0% up to 45%.
The first portion of income is tax free. The more you earn, the higher the tax bracket you move into - which means your marginal rate increase. If you are in the 45% bracket, it doesnt mean you pay 45% worth of tax on your full salary.

👏Conversion
This graphic is trying to show where you pay the same amount of tax in business and in your personal capacity. Once you go over R838k income in your hands you start paying more than 27% marginal tax. (Obviously, this is a simplified but you get the idea).

But here’s what most business owners misunderstand:
It’s not about comparing 27% vs 39% or 45%.

It’s about:
• Your existing personal income
• Cashflow needs
• Retained earnings strategy
• Future growth plans
• Dividend tax implications
• And long-term wealth planning

The “right” amount to transfer is different for every founder.
And during tax season, this decision can cost or save you hundreds of thousands.

If you’re a business owner and you don’t know your:
• Current effective personal rate
• Company profit position
• Provisional tax exposure

You’re guessing.
Your tax strategy really does matter.

Watching 30 Years of Dreams Burn 🔥

I have been super quiet on social. Not because I am taking time off, but because I have been grappling with what matters. How to restore faith in day-to-day existence after watching 30 years of hard work and many resources get wiped out in 1 hour and 30 minutes?

We started the year setting goals with our kids - big calendar, their first ever goals session with us, we toasted to them, celebrated them and read them out to each other at the big table on our stoep.

A few days later, I was standing at that same table watering our roof after evacuating our home from a wild mountain fire.

Our children are 5 and 8.
Their goals weren’t about things.
They were about more time with us.
Getting better at a sport they love.
Doing things that bring joy.

Then the fire came.
Within 10 metres of our bedroom window.
Both cars packed with what mattered most.
The kids and dogs sent to safety.
My husband and dad fighting flames bigger than our house. My mom and aunt packing up the house next door.
I stood crying under a burnt-orange sky, watering our roof as flames moved closer, soot falling around me.
With the grace of God and some miracles, the fire stopped in our back garden. However, 120 hectares of land are completely burnt.
I don’t mean superficial burn, I mean black, black land straight out of a moonscape scene.

The next day we walked for hours looking for injured animals. A little buck was found with burnt feet, she had to be put down as she would not recover. She’s called Sunny ☀️ by my daughter. She symbolises the level of loss, destruction, absolute devastation.

We lost 30 hectares of vines - years of work, years before those vines yield again if ever.
120 hectares of biodynamic, organic land burned.
Trees planted 30 years ago.
An incredible ecosystem in balance - gone in 90 minutes.

It messes with you. It makes you question your purpose on everything. It makes your question the value of everything (the stuff I didnt put in the car - do we need it?!). It makes your question what is important? What we save in a time of crisis. What we would miss if it was all gone.

You can build for decades and watch it disappear in an hour.
You start asking: what am I doing this all for?
Walking the land now, there isn’t a single leaf.
Not a patch of green.
No movement. No life.

And then, in the middle of the blackened field, I saw colour.
A protea.
Once tall and full and beautiful.
Burnt — but not finished.
She had already dropped her seeds.
Already beginning again.
She can't change the past, but she can start getting ready for the future or she can lie down and surrender. Life is not predictable. Life is not kind. Life is not controllable. But you can decide, like the protea how to rise from the ashes. How to respond to hard situations. How will you show up after being stripped of everything.

I don’t have a cohesive lesson.
Only this: perspective isn’t found in January goals.
Sometimes it arrives in the form of children's goals or in the form of a burnt Proteas orange — reminding you what truly matters, before the world has to do it for you.

PS. Incredibly grateful to the people who helped fight fires in the Cape Winelands this year, including the men in my life, the Drakenstein Farm Watch and the Drakenstein Municipality. You saved our houses, our farm animals and the people. Drakenstein Local Municipality DFW Fire & Rescue NPC - donate to them if you can ✨

✨ What an incredible night at the Forty Under 40 South Africa Awards!

While I didn’t walk away as a category winner, I left feeling inspired, content, full - full of growth, energy, and connection.

The room was filled with founders, dreamers, and changemakers who reminded me why I love what I do. Every story, every conversation, every shared laugh reinforced how much power there is in community and collaboration.

A huge appreciation to the organisers FORTY UNDER 40 SOUTH AFRICA for creating a space that celebrates leadership and purpose, and to all the finalists - your passion is contagious, and it was an honour to stand alongside you.

Here’s to choosing impact over titles, collaboration over competition, and continuing to build something bigger than ourselves. 🌿

And a special shoutout to our table - Graham Welham , Lerato Maris , Katlego Mabusela and The Fun House 😅 you made the evening unforgettable. 🎉🤣

A morning of learning so far!

Incredible to hear from the amazing Richard Abbey Jnr on his journey founding the FORTY UNDER 40 SOUTH AFRICA awards.

What is Whole Wealth?

🌊 The last few days I put the laptop away and have been at the beach with my family.

No deadlines. No spreadsheets. Just waves, sand, and sticky ice-cream hands.

And it reminded me of something I tell my clients all the time but sometimes forget myself:
✨A wealthy life isn’t only about what you’re building for the future - it’s also about what you choose to notice right now. ✨

We get so caught up in making plans, chasing growth, ticking boxes… that we forget to pause and actually live.

Because here’s the truth:
👉 Wealth isn’t just measured in Rands and assets.
👉 It’s measured in moments and joy.

The sound of your kids laughing.
The calm of watching the tide come in while your child builds sand castles.
The freedom of knowing you’re fully present and don’t have to answer the phone, mails or messages.

Yes, plan for tomorrow. But don’t miss today.

That’s Whole Wealth. 🌿

🌟 Honoured and excited to share that I’ve been selected as a Finalist for the Forty UNDER 40 SOUTH AFRICA Awards 2025 in the category of Consultancy and Professional Services.

This nomination is more than recognition of a career - it reflects a journey of identity:
➡️ From pencil skirts, stilettos, corporate boardrooms, and private equity transactions, including working under Magda Wierzycka at Sygnia, standing on the JSE floor on the day of Sygnia listing, with a R500m private equity deal at Investec…
➡️ To stepping into motherhood, which reshaped my ambitions and taught me that purpose and career for me must coexist…
➡️ To building Saige Business Consulting’s finance division, where I get to empower SMEs daily, helping founders move from survival to growth with strong financial systems and stronger strategies.

Alongside this, I’m deeply proud of the and Programme, which has touched over 120 young women and is now shaping pathways for professional athletes, and the , which amplifies the voices of women leaders.

For me, this nomination is about proving that finance is not just about numbers - it’s about creating hope, opportunity, and sustainable impact. I get so excited for what is to come, but (as rings true for most of us millennials living in 2025) I need to stop and celebrate what has been. Because wow it’s been beautiful chaos! 🤩

🙏 Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey and supported and loved me and my crazy wild ideas! 🤣
