Meet Nkumbulo Magqabi: The entrepreneur who used broken goods to repair his future.

Nkumbulo Magqabi grew up wearing discarded clothes, but escaped poverty by selling discarded electronic appliances like toasters and blenders.

Raised in poverty, with no money even for school shoes, the 41-year-old entrepreneur is now a business story with a peculiar twist.

He makes a living by repairing surplus home appliances, a beneficiary of an innovative skills training and business development programme.

The CEO Chirp: The book in our front office

There is a thick book in the foyer of the Cape Chamber’s office that tells the story of the organisation — the first 150 years or so.

A lot has happened in the almost three-quarters of a century that has passed since then.

The book may be out of date, but the illustration on the front cover suggests some things stay the same no matter how far back you go.

For more than 15 years, Taking Care of Business has been turning surplus merchandise into opportunity.

Their circular economy model annually diverts more than R2-million worth of goods from landfill, supports thousands of entrepreneurs, and generated over R500-million in entrepreneur profits.

That's why TCB founder Tracey Chambers and her team were recognised as a winner at the 2026 Western Cape Economy Innovation Awards.

If you were in the room at the Western Cape Economy Innovation Awards, you weren't just witnessing innovation.

You were networking with the people who are driving the Western Cape economy forward.

From award-winning innovators and entrepreneurs to senior government leaders, academics, investors, and industry decision-makers.

The evening brought together a remarkable cross-section of the Western Cape's innovation ecosystem.

The Western Cape Economy Innovation Awards is more than an awards ceremony, it's a platform where stakeholders from business, government, academia, and civil society come together to build meaningful connections, exchange ideas, and spark future partnerships.

The awards may have been the reason for gathering, the conversations were the real opportunity.

Don't miss next year's event!

From enzymes to superyachts, the Western Cape is a fast-rising innovation hotspot and potential global benchmark for entrepreneurial excellence.

That was the overarching theme of this week’s Western Cape Economy Innovation Awards at the Cape Town City Hall, co-hosted by the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Cape Higher Education Consortium.

The second edition of the province’s ‘Innovation Oscars’ saw 13 awardees recognised across six economic categories.

The gala event also featured keynote speeches from economic stakeholders, among them Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Other VIP guests among the 480-strong audience included political analyst Moeletsi Mbeki, Gift of the Givers founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, multiple provincial ministers and mayors, and foreign dignitaries.

Two years ago, we conceived and developed the Western Cape Economy Innovation Awards.

The intent was to create an "Oscars" style event to celebrate the champions who do what our country needs most: those who not only create opportunities for themselves, but innovate to unlock economic opportunities that make our part of the world a better place.

The intent was to host an inspiring annual event that:
1. Demystifies what is required to shape a growing economy.
2. Elevates role models who demonstrate the behavioural patterns that stimulate growth.
3. Cultivates a widespread desire for similar entrepreneurial behaviour.
4. Deepens the collective belief in what is possible.

The stakeholder responses indicate that we are well on track in realising these goals.

A chance phone call during the Covid lockdown sparked a local biotech success story of global proportions.

Stellenbosch biotech researcher Dr. Du Preez van Staden was invited to visit a Cape Town biotech lab at a time when Covid restrictions made it difficult to access imported proteins and enzymes.

The private lab urgently needed these products to manufacture Covid tests and required immediate assistance.

The visit turned out to be a revelation. “I walked into their lab and had a real “wow” moment, because I realised that the work we were doing in our academic lab was already highly competitive and, in some areas, ahead of what I had expected.” Van Staden says of his ‘Aha!’ moment in Cape Town.
