Additions & Alterations to Existing Dwelling - The existing thatched building needed to be modernized and seemed to be out of place.
After careful consideration the concept aimed to dramatically modernize the building by changing the look completely, but doing it within a limited budget. By using the existing structures or "bones" of the house and using modern materials the team set about dressing the building to achieve this.
Multiple challenges lay ahead as the conversion from a thatched roof to sheeted will have a few surprises.

The modern barn type architecture aims to be in contrast with the traditional farm cottage interior - cold modern elements with the warm, red clay tiles and exposed timber beams of the interior are some of the elements that was key to the design.

House 1672_ VDV

New House for Owner – Situated south of the town Paarl in the prestigious Val De Vie estate. The design brief called for a large family home with enough space for the immediate and extended family of the owner. Each space to be separate but also linked to the main house to ensure the home would function as a whole and not be experienced as separate individual dwellings.

With the longest site edge orientated East to West, the initial concept was a response to the local weather conditions. The Val De Vie estate experiences strong South Easterly winds in the summer months and temperatures rise to above 35 degrees. By placing the garages on the North and South boundaries a protected courtyard was created to block the entrance from the prevailing wind. This language continues throughout and creates a private courtyard on the western side of the property. With the placement of mature trees at key locations in the courtyard the western façade of the building will be screened from the harsh summer sun.

The concept was further developed to ensure the beautiful mountain views are showcased throughout. With the private courtyard being the central focus of the ground floor. The kitchen, dining and living areas would spill out onto a covered deck which would be screened by the lush private courtyard.

The design uses simple forms, inspired by local architecture. The scale of the facades is visually broken down by the addition of solar screens, pergolas, and floor to ceiling windows. The result, a modern large house which reads as a smaller, less imposing structure. The simple clean architecture of the house ensures the beautiful natural surroundings are showcased enforcing the relaxed lifestyle of the estate.

House Morgan _ Constantia Heights

Additions and Alterations to Existing House - Situated stone’s throw away from the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, this project in Constantia aims to replace a derelict existing house with a modern home in dialogue with its natural surroundings.

Located on a steep slope, the existing house is surrounded by thick vegetation and established trees, the site is characterised by the complete dominance of vegetation over the structure. The client’s
brief was to construct a new home, which would still be well positioned within the sites natural context without destroying the surrounds. The current house suffers from extensive water damage and persistent damp and water problems. The house is also outdated and does not cater for the needs of the owners anymore. As a result, the decision was made to demolish the old house and design a new one. The brief called for the house to reinforce the connection between the beautiful landscape and the interior of the home, provide more living space as required, prioritise sustainability and good environmental principles and finally to positions the building sensitively within the landscape. To minimize the impact any new structure would have on the established vegetation on site, the design rooted itself around the conceptual approach of sticking as close as possible to the open areas which would be left behind once the existing building has been demolished.

This proved to be a challenge as the new brief required more space than in the original home. As a result, the building is split into three parts, the entrance space, the living spaces, the private spaces. These three main spaces are then stepped along the site to create two distinct wings of the home, each located in existing open space on site. These wings are then linked by the entrance space.

The building is set into the site, lowering the height of the building. The scale is further stepped down by the porch roof, allowing the building to sit unimposing on the site.

The existing house was plagued by inadequate light and ventilation creating problems with damp and mould. As a result, the owners requested that the spaces are naturally well lit and ventilated. To achieve this a deck was introduced around the house, allowing for large openable glass doors to breath fresh air and light into the spaces.

The project will incorporate contemporary sustainable technologies such as geothermal heating, rainwater harvesting and solar power generation on site.
