Immerse yourself in the archeological history of the Mapungubwe National Park

Our recent visit to Mapungubwe National Park was a captivating journey into the remnants of the lost Mapungubwe civilization.

Delving into the rich history of trade in the region, we traced artefacts all the way from India and the Middle East. Guided by the knowledgeable Johannes, we gained insights into the daily rituals of the tribe and discovered where the famous gold rhino and sceptre was found.

In the company of our fellow tour group members, we also had crash course in the ancient strategy game of Mancala which mainly the men of the tribe used to play. The trip was a reminder of the enduring legacies left by ancient cultures and we will definitely be back to this magical site.

If I’m honest, this was probably one of the most surreal trips I’ve ever done.

Landing in Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and driving straight into the bush felt unreal from the start.

The lodges are completely surrounded by nature, so at night we had to keep the balcony doors shut because animals move around freely. Apparently leopards ending up on rooftops isn’t even that unusual.

During the day I saw elephants, giraffes, crocodiles, zebras and more animals than I can even remember, and at night you could hear lions somewhere in the distance.

It’s one of those places that genuinely makes you forget about everything else for a bit.
