Making the most of raised beds means using the space outside the beds as much as using the space within. How about turning your pathways into "compost-ways". The decomposing organic matter increases microbial and animal life right next to productive soil so in theory supporting diverse life within the food garden.

We had a whole lot of organic matter to use in our clients garden including branches from an over grown lavender bush to make use of. Digging the pathways deeper and using that soil to fill the bed increased the volume of our "compost-ways" and limiting the need to bring in soil from else where. A thick layer of woodchips supplied by covered up the uneven branches and made for a cushion under our feet. I am looking forward to reaching down in 8 months time to get compost for planting. Then we can start the process again.

Thanks to Zukisa for sticking it out on this wet Tuesday in the garden. The sun came out to make the shots.

Your cabbage is pretty much ready to harvest but you aren't quite ready to have it out the ground and on your plate. Well all those big leaves aren't so useful any more and could even go into a dish (there's something about Savoy Cabbage leaves that makes them far more appetising than your normal cabbage leaves).

I like the idea of making room for succession planting where new seedlings you would like to have in your garden get some time to grow underneath the canopy of a cabbage in waiting.

I was fortunate to pick up these Savoy Cabbages from which were planted on the 2nd of March. Just less than 90 days later and the harvest has begun.
