HAS EDUCATION FAILED AFRICA, OR HAS AFRICA FAILED EDUCATION?
1. What if Africa has educated people for jobs instead of for value creation?

For over a century, much of Africa inherited an education model designed during the colonial period. Its primary purpose was often to produce clerks, teachers, administrators, accountants, and civil servants rather than entrepreneurs, manufacturers, engineers, inventors, or industrialists. The result is that many students are taught: To Pass examinations | Obtain certificates | Look for employment | Depend on government or corporate jobs.

Instead of learning: How to create businesses? How to manufacture products? How to solve community problems? How to commercialize ideas? How to build wealth? This creates a labour market where millions compete for relatively few formal jobs.

2. What if survival depends more on practical skills?

Every society depends daily on people with practical capabilities: Farmers produce food.

Builders construct homes. Electricians restore power. Mechanics repair transport. Welders manufacture equipment. Plumbers provide sanitation. Software developers build digital systems. Entrepreneurs organize production. Without them, hospitals, banks, and government offices cannot function. Many education systems have unintentionally placed higher social status on office professions than on technical and vocational careers, even though both are essential.

3. Has creativity been reduced?

Many African classrooms still emphasize: memorization, repeating information, examination performance, following instructions. Less emphasis is sometimes placed on: innovation, experimentation, design, critical thinking, product development, business creation. Countries that have transformed rapidly economically have generally invested heavily in creativity alongside strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, science, and technical education.

4. Is unemployment caused by education?

Education contributes, but it is unlikely to be the sole cause. Unemployment also reflects: slow industrialization, limited manufacturing, inadequate infrastructure, weak access to finance, corruption, policy uncertainty, low investment, rapid population growth, mismatch between training and labour market demand. Even a perfect education system cannot absorb graduates if an economy is not creating enough productive enterprises.

5. Why have millions graduated while poverty remains?

This is perhaps the biggest question. A country becomes wealthy not simply because people graduate, but because graduates help increase productivity. Prosperous economies tend to produce: goods, technology, machinery, pharmaceuticals, software, processed foods, manufactured exports, intellectual property. Many African economies still export mostly raw materials while importing finished products with much higher value. As a result, education has not always translated into broad-based industrial growth.

6. What might a different curriculum look like?

Imagine if every learner graduated with practical experience in: financial literacy, entrepreneurship, agriculture, coding, manufacturing, construction, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, product design, project management, communication, sales and marketing. Alongside mathematics, science, languages, and history, students would also leave school knowing how to create economic value.

7. The bigger picture

Africa's challenge may not be that it has "too much education," but that education, industry, finance, and economic policy have often been poorly aligned. Economic transformation happens when: Education teaches relevant skills. Industry creates demand for those skills.

Finance supports new businesses. Government provides infrastructure and stable policies. Entrepreneurs convert knowledge into products and services. If any of these elements is missing, graduates struggle regardless of how well they performed academically.

A powerful question for Africa

Perhaps the question is not: "How many graduates have we produced?" but rather: "How many problem-solvers, innovators, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, skilled technicians, farmers, engineers, researchers, and wealth creators have we produced?"

That shift in thinkingβ€”from education for employment to education for productivity and value creationβ€”may be one of the defining challenges for Africa over the next generation. Education remains essential, but its greatest impact comes when it is connected to an economy capable of turning knowledge, skills, and creativity into sustainable prosperity.

HOW WILL AFRICA DEAL WITH HER ECONOMIC REALITIES? πŸ€”βœŒπŸΎ

Singapore's success emerged from Singaporean realities. Norway's success emerged from Norwegian realities. The next major contribution to public finance may come when African scholars, policymakers, economists, traditional leaders, and development practitioners collectively define what an authentically African fiscal management framework should look like for the next 50 years rather than continuing to adapt frameworks designed for fundamentally different societies.

To learn more about Fiscal Risk Management enroll in our program even from across your desk in your country (online training) WhatsApp us on (+27)834658666 or email us on [email protected]
