cal shifts in people, primarily through the use of the Enneagram and the Leadership Maturity Framework (Cook-Greuter and Torbert’s work). Aephoria has designed and run intensive enneagram courses for companies within the petrochemical, FMCG, mining and banking sectors in emerging markets. These courses range from 2 to 16 days in duration and include individual and team work, the enneagram and strategy, enneagram and diversity and many other applications. We have recently mapped the enneagram with Cook-Greuter’s LMF to provide a specific and rich developmental pathway for ourselves and our partners.

In this month’s article, Christo van Staden continues the exploration of workplace pairs, this time with a focus on trust. Trust is what makes the relationship hang together and move easily. It is developed over time, it can be broken in a moment, and repairing and growing trust is an ongoing relationship priority.

How does the Enneagram help us to navigate the processes of trust? The three centres of the Enneagram point us in the direction of three trust intelligences that need to work together. Of these three, the instinctual intelligence is the least explored in organisational trust literature. We trust, or don’t trust, long before we give thought to it. The instincts tell us whether we are safe, and if what needs protection, is well protected.

Couples may come with money, parenting, s*x, silence, dishes, or the same fight in another form. The topic matters, but the deeper work is the loop between them: one moves closer, the other pulls away; one reacts, the other shuts down.

Most leadership pairs don’t realise they’re out of sync until it shows up like this:
– You’re having the same conversation, just in different ways
– Decisions feel heavier than they should
– One of you is pushing pace, the other is pulling back
– You leave meetings aligned, but act differently afterwards

It doesn’t feel like conflict.
It just feels harder than it should be.

This is what we mean by patterns.
