The existing solar system was no longer giving the client the backup capacity they needed—so the solution required more than a simple equipment replacement.

For this project, Emerald retained and rewired the existing solar-panel array while redesigning and replacing the remaining system infrastructure.

The upgraded solution included:

⚡ 10 kW of inverter capacity
🔋 15 kWh of battery storage
☀️ Existing PV array retained and rewired
🏠 Household loads placed on backup
🍳 Geyser and stove left as non-essential loads
✅ Distribution and protection equipment redesigned
✅ COC and City approval completed

This installation comes from the Emerald project archive and demonstrates the type of backup-power assessment, redesign and upgrade work our team can provide.

Reliable infrastructure isn’t built by choosing equipment first.

It begins with understanding the operational requirements, identifying the risks and designing the right system around the needs of the site.

That is why Emerald Infrastructure Solutions provides independent technology advice rather than being tied to one manufacturer.

We support clients through the complete project lifecycle—from site assessment and system design to procurement, installation, commissioning and long-term maintenance.

Our practical experience includes critical power, standby generation, renewable energy, electrical infrastructure and server-room environments.

With 40+ years of combined experience, more than 100 critical power projects and over 30 maintenance clients, our focus remains the same: reliable solutions, structured delivery and continued support.

A correctly sized cable must do more than carry the current—it must also deliver an acceptable voltage at the load.

Longer cable runs and higher load currents can increase voltage drop, potentially affecting equipment performance and overall system reliability.

In Episode 09 of Emerald Insights, we look at the Emerald Voltage Drop Calculator.

The calculator uses key project inputs—including load current, system voltage, phase type, cable length, cable construction and conductor size—to estimate:

• Voltage drop in volts
• Voltage drop as a percentage
• Whether the result falls within the entered allowable limit

In the example shown, the estimated voltage drop is 12.00 V, or 3.00%, against a maximum entered limit of 5%.

This provides a useful planning check, but final cable selection should always be verified by a qualified electrical professional against the actual installation conditions and applicable requirements.

Swipe through the slides to see how the calculator works.

Choosing a cable based on current alone can leave important installation risks unchecked.

The Emerald Cable Size Calculator considers the load, system voltage, cable length, conductor type, allowable voltage drop and installation derating before producing a preliminary recommendation.

For the example shown in this carousel, a 50 A three-phase load over a 30 m route produces a recommendation of:

• 10 mm² copper cable
• 10 mm² earth conductor
• 3.15 V estimated voltage drop
• 0.79% estimated voltage drop

Swipe through to see how the inputs become a cable recommendation—and which technical checks still matter before final selection.

Final cable sizing must always be confirmed by a qualified electrical professional according to the actual installation conditions and applicable requirements.

Try the Cable Size Calculator on the Emerald Infrastructure Solutions website.

How much energy could a solar system generate—and what could that mean for electricity savings?

Emerald Insights — Episode 07 introduces our Solar Yield Calculator, a practical planning tool designed to provide an initial view of solar feasibility.

By entering information such as PV system size, daily electricity consumption, peak sun hours, electricity tariff, battery capacity and system cost, the calculator can estimate:

☀️ Daily, monthly and annual solar generation
🔋 Battery storage and estimated backup time
⚡ Solar contribution to daily consumption
💰 Potential annual savings and simple payback
🏢 Approximate panel quantity and roof area
🌱 Estimated long-term generation and CO₂ reduction

These results provide a useful starting point for discussing a potential solar project. Final system design should still account for the site’s load profile, roof conditions, shading, electrical infrastructure and operational requirements.

View the carousel to see how the calculator works, or visit the Emerald Knowledge Centre to explore the tool.

What role should a UPS play — and when is a standby generator needed as well?

We’ve launched the first edition of the Emerald Insights newsletter, where we’ll be taking a deeper look at practical topics around critical power, infrastructure and business continuity.

In our first edition, we explore the different roles of UPS systems and standby generators.

A generator can provide power through a longer outage once it has started and taken over the required load. A UPS can provide immediate continuity to selected equipment while that process takes place — but whether an operation needs one, the other, or both depends on the requirement.

The discussion starts with a simple question:
What happens to the operation when this load loses power?

Read the first edition of Emerald Insights and let us know what technical topics you’d like to see us explore in future editions:

Planning standby power involves more than selecting a generator. Fuel availability, expected loading, operating time and running cost all matter when the generator is required to keep a site operational.

In Emerald Insights Episode 06, we look at our Generator Fuel Consumption Calculator. It helps turn a planned operating scenario into preliminary estimates for hourly fuel use, total litres required, running cost and tank autonomy.

Enter the generator size, expected load, runtime, diesel price and tank capacity to explore how changing the assumptions can affect the outcome.

The calculator is intended as a planning aid. Final fuel and operating requirements should be confirmed against the selected generator manufacturer’s data and the conditions of the site.

EMERALD INSIGHTS | EPISODE 05
GENERATOR SIZING CALCULATOR

How much generator capacity could your essential load require?

Our Generator Sizing Calculator helps you develop a preliminary standby-power estimate using your connected load, power factor, diversity, motor-starting allowance, future expansion and preferred generator loading target.

The result shows how the initial load develops into a recommended generator kW and kVA value before suggesting an appropriate standard generator size.

This makes the calculator useful for early planning, budget discussions and comparing possible system sizes. It does not replace a detailed technical assessment. The final design must still be checked against the real site load, starting currents, environmental conditions, fuel arrangement, voltage regulation and the selected manufacturer's data.

Try it for yourself:
https://www.emerald-is.co.za/knowledge-centre/calculators/generator-sizing-calculator

Enter the load, review the recommendation and speak to Emerald when the final generator design needs to be confirmed.
