🚨 Tax season panic does not start with SARS.

It starts with missing documents, messy books, old records, unreconciled bank accounts, and that one invoice you were β€œsure” you saved somewhere.

Tax Season 2026 starts soon, and now is the time to get organised before the pressure starts.

Start gathering your documents now:

βœ… IRP5s
βœ… Medical certificates
βœ… Retirement annuity certificates
βœ… Investment certificates
βœ… Bank statements
βœ… Invoices and receipts

Business owners should also check that:

βœ… Books are up to date
βœ… Bank accounts are reconciled
βœ… VAT records are complete
βœ… Payroll records are accurate
βœ… Expenses are properly allocated

Because here is the truth:
Bad records usually lead to bad tax returns.

And bad tax returns can lead to stress, corrections, penalties, and unnecessary tax problems.

That is not tax planning.
That is guessing with a spreadsheet.

For business owners, tax season is not just about submitting a return.

It is a test of whether the books are clean, complete and reliable.

Before filing, business owners should check:

βœ… Is bookkeeping up to date?
βœ… Are bank accounts reconciled?
βœ… Has income been captured correctly?
βœ… Are business expenses properly allocated?
βœ… Are VAT records complete?
βœ… Are payroll records accurate?
βœ… Are loan accounts and drawings correctly recorded?
βœ… Do provisional tax estimates make sense?

If the books are wrong, the tax return will probably be wrong too.

Blunt, but true.

Tax planning only works when the accounting records are reliable. Otherwise, you are not planning β€” you are guessing with a spreadsheet.

🚨 Received a SARS auto-assessment?

Do not just click β€œaccept” without checking it first.

That friendly button can bite.

SARS auto-assessments are based on third-party information, such as IRP5s, medical aid details, retirement fund contributions, investment income and banking details.

But that does not mean everything is complete or correct.

Before accepting your auto-assessment, check:

βœ… Is all your income included?
βœ… Are your deductions correct?
βœ… Are medical credits reflected properly?
βœ… Are retirement contributions included?
βœ… Is investment income correct?
βœ… Are your banking details right?
βœ… Is anything missing?

A few minutes of checking now can save you time, stress and money later.

Do not file on autopilot.

If you are unsure whether your SARS auto-assessment is correct, let Smarter Accounting review it before you accept.

Tax season becomes painful when documents are missing.

β€’ Bank statements.
β€’ IRP5 certificates.
β€’ Medical aid certificates.
β€’ Retirement annuity certificates.
β€’ Business expense invoices.
β€’ VAT records.
β€’ Payroll records.
β€’ Receipts that are apparently β€œsomewhere safe.”

That β€œsomewhere safe” folder has caused many tax-season headaches.

The smarter move is to gather your supporting documents early.

Proper records can reduce stress, avoid delays, and help make sure valid deductions are not missed.

I’ve written a practical article on what business owners and taxpayers should do now that Tax Season 2026 dates have been confirmed:

If you are not sure whether your documents, deductions, bookkeeping, VAT or payroll records are ready, let’s take a proper look.

🚨 Tax Season 2026 starts soon β€” are your books ready?

SARS has confirmed the key filing dates for the 2026 tax season, and now is the time to get organised before the pressure starts.

Tax season problems usually do not start with SARS.

They start with:

Missing documents.
Messy books.
Old banking details.
Unclaimed deductions.
Incorrect auto-assessments.
VAT and payroll records that are not up to date.

By the time the deadline arrives, those small problems can quickly become big stress.

Do not wait until tax season is on top of you.

Start checking your records now.
Update your details.
Gather your documents.
Review your deductions.
Make sure your bookkeeping is current.

Tax season should be a review β€” not a rescue mission.

Tax Season 2026 is officially on the radar.

SARS has confirmed the filing dates, which means now is the time to get organised β€” not when the deadlines are already breathing down your neck.

This is the time to check:

βœ… Are your documents ready?
βœ… Are your banking and personal details updated?
βœ… Is your bookkeeping up to date?
βœ… Have your deductions been reviewed?
βœ… Are your VAT and payroll records complete?
βœ… Should your auto-assessment be checked before accepting it?
βœ… Is your provisional tax planning on track?

Tax season does not have to become a panic event.

But it does become one when everything is left until the last minute.

Shareholder loans are common in small businesses.

But when they are not recorded properly, they can become messy very quickly.

Owners often:

β€’ pay business expenses personally
β€’ lend money to the company
β€’ draw money irregularly
β€’ leave loan balances sitting for years
β€’ mix personal and business money without proper records

At first, it may seem harmless.

But later, messy shareholder loans can affect tax planning, financial statements, estate planning, business sales, and SARS queries.

In simple terms:

If money moves between the owner and the company, it should be properly recorded.

Informal arrangements are where tax gremlins breed. And once those gremlins arrive, they usually bring paperwork, penalties and headaches.

πŸ’° Are you claiming all your real business expenses?

Many business owners pay more tax than necessary because valid business expenses are often missed, forgotten, or never properly recorded.

Before tax season arrives, it may be worth reviewing:

βœ… Software subscriptions

βœ… Bank charges and merchant fees

βœ… Phone, internet and office expenses

βœ… Accounting and professional fees

βœ… Insurance and other legitimate business costs

But there is another side to the story.

Claiming expenses is not about putting every payment through the books.

A valid claim should be:

βœ” Business-related

βœ” Properly supported

βœ” Correctly recorded

βœ” Able to withstand SARS scrutiny

Remember:

πŸ“Œ Valid claims save tax.

πŸ“Œ Poor claims create risk.

πŸ“Œ Missing records can turn a legitimate deduction into a SARS problem.

The goal is not to claim more.

The goal is to claim correctly.

I recently wrote an article on this topic which may help business owners review their current structure and tax position:

How are you taking money out of your business?

Salary?
Dividends?
Drawings?
Shareholder loan?
A bit of everything and hope for the best?

That last one is popular. Not always wise.

Owner remuneration should not be random.

The way you take money from your business can affect:

βœ… PAYE
βœ… company tax
βœ… personal tax
βœ… dividends tax
βœ… shareholder loans
βœ… cash flow
βœ… retirement planning

Salary and dividends are not the same thing. They have different tax implications, compliance requirements and cash-flow effects.

Before tax season, it is worth reviewing whether your current setup still makes sense.

02/06/2026

🚨 SARS has officially announced the 2026 Tax Season dates.

If you receive an Auto Assessment from SARS, do not assume it is automatically correct.

SARS prepares these assessments using information received from employers, banks, medical schemes, retirement funds and other third parties.

Before accepting an Auto Assessment, check that:

βœ… All income has been included

βœ… Medical aid information is correct

βœ… Retirement contributions are reflected correctly

βœ… Investment income has been included

βœ… Rental income (if applicable) has been declared

βœ… Any allowable deductions have been considered

Remember: an Auto Assessment is a starting point, not a substitute for reviewing your tax affairs.

Many taxpayers simply accept the assessment and only discover errors later.

The 2026 filing season dates announced by SARS are:

πŸ“… Auto Assessments: 1 July – 12 July 2026

πŸ“… Individual taxpayers (non-provisional): 13 July – 23 October 2026

πŸ“… Provisional taxpayers: 13 July 2026 – 22 January 2027

Tax season is closer than many people think.

Now is a good time to make sure your records are complete, your supporting documents are available, and your tax affairs are up to date.

πŸ“© If you would like assistance reviewing your Auto Assessment, tax return, business records, VAT, payroll or tax position, send me a message with the word "TAX".
