Should you do research before or after design? Obviously, as a research company, we are going to say, "All the time!" but you can be strategic about the type of research you do when, based on where you are in the product development process.

There are two main areas of UX research: evaluative and generative. One looks forward to uncovering possibilities; the other looks back to evaluate a solution.

This month How Might We turns 5 years old!

In November 2017 How Might We was born. We started as a collective of like-minded freelance UX designers that wanted to work together and learn from each other. After about a year, Jacky and Amanda formally joined Chris to grow How Might We to more than just a collection of designers, but one of Cape Town’s only dedicated UX companies. In February 2019 we moved into our first office and later that year hired our fourth employee. A few years later, just after the lockdown, we outgrew our little office and became a fully remote team, visiting co-working spaces a few times a month. During this time we made the biggest change since we began and specialised in UX Research. We have always believed that talking to users is the most important part of good UX so decided to focus on just that. Earlier this year, we hired more amazing people and are now 8-strong.

It’s been an absolutely remarkable journey and we really owe it all to the incredible clients that trusted us and the awesome people that have helped us along the way.
