Olden and Associates are excited to announce our involvement in the innovative project to install agrovoltaics (raised solar panels) on the Philippi Horticultural Area. As Urban and Regional planning consultants we are completing the Land Use Applications and related application for the developments.

We are working with EM Power, who are leading the charge introducing agrovoltaics to Cape Town. The practice entails developing agricultural land to allow for raised solar panels to be installed while farming practices take place below. EM Power together with Etana are one of 15 commercial energy suppliers who are part of the City of Cape Town’s catalytic energy wheeling project. With the current state of energy and the imminent threat of climate change, this development has the potential to play a part in creating, greener, more resilient and energy secure city.

Sofia Briel has recently joined as an urban planner. She has a master’s degree from University of Cape Town as well an architectural degree and is combining her skills in the built environment @ Olden & Associates and is working on complex land use applications that require her inputs on built form and urban design.

Ally Winkler has a master’s degree in Spatial Planning as well as a BSocSci in Environmental Sciences. Her positive energy and skill set are very well received, and she is currently involved in driving the projects with City of Cape Town Renewable Energy Department for solar panels on a large scale in the Cape Flats, Philippi Horticultural area.

To our valued clients,

Following the announcement from our President Cyril Ramaphosa of a 21 day lockdown commencing midnight on Thursday March 2020, Olden and Associates advises the following:

1. The Land Use Planning Department City of Cape Town will be closed on the 26th of March until further notice.
2. Pursuant to the above and Presidents call to lockdown, our offices will close at 16H30 on the 26th of March.
3. As part of our contingency plan, our professional staff will continue to render services remotely and will be available on their mobile phones and by email on their laptops with their direct office lines also being diverted to their mobiles.

We endeavor to ensure as little disruption as possible during the following 3 weeks.

In the City of Cape Town’s drive to curb urban sprawl, certain amendments to the Planning legislation have been made, which allow for controlled densification (i.e. 3 dwellings per property), short term letting from flats and minor freestanding and minor rooftop cell masts. These changes to the Municipal Planning By law have the potential to impact on the built form and property rights for property owners in the City of Town.
