Wow....what a year.As we wind down, we’ll be reflecting and sharing a few highlights from the projects that shaped 2025. But for now, here’s a glimpse behind the scenes from a recent shoot.

One of our exciting collaborations this year was with New York–based production company None Other, documenting how Daily Maverick is using AI to strengthen journalism. Commissioned by a major AI player, the project explored how DM harnesses technology to deepen reader engagement, push back against disinformation, and increase newsroom efficiency.

Big thanks to the wonderful team who made this all possible.

Congratulations to our storytelling partners, the DAR team at Stellenbosch University - winning big at last week’s MACE Excellence Awards! The team took home three awards - one for our Maties: Legends and Pioneers documentary series now streaming on Showmax.

This is a fantastic achievement!
What strikes us most about this success is how it speaks volumes about what happens when storytelling partners are given the time and space to truly understand an institution’s DNA. The shift from documentary producers as vendors to strategic, valued partners over time makes all the difference.

These wins at the Marketing Advancement and Communication in Education (MACE) Excellence Awards are no small feat - they suggest that the work put story first and did its job to drive audience engagement. There’s no comparison between surface-level content creation and deeply engaging storytelling that emerges from genuine understanding of culture and values. We’re so grateful to have built exactly the kind of partnership that allows creativity and strategic thinking to flourish together.

This year marks a century since the birth of Pinotage, South Africa’s signature grape, first cultivated in 1925 by Professor Abraham Izak Perold in Stellenbosch, where the first vineyards still thrive on what is now the STIAS campus.

Commissioned by Stellenbosch University, this film celebrates a century of heritage and innovation, tracing the journey of Pinotage from its roots in the Cape to its recognition on the world stage.

We were honoured to interview Beyers Truter, ‘The Prince of Pinotage’ and a proud Stellenbosch alumnus, whose passion and pioneering work helped take Pinotage to the world.

A special thank you to Belinda Jacobs from the Pinotage Association for her invaluable insight and contribution to narrating this story. It’s been a privilege to bring such an iconic piece of South African history to life.

Part of the ongoing series Maties Legends and Pioneers, celebrating the remarkable alumni who continue to shape the legacy of Stellenbosch University.

Story First: The Evolution of Institutional Storytelling for Africa

From static messaging to dynamic ecosystems of stories, the way institutions communicate is changing and so is their impact.

Here are some key ideas from our recent article on transversal storytelling, a narrative approach that adapts across contexts, voices, and mediums to build lasting connections.

“Agriculture is the backbone of Africa and without agriculture we cannot do anything.”
— Gordon Victor

From a rural town in Northern Uganda to leading thousands of smallholder farmers into a more sustainable future — Gordon Victor is transforming agriculture from the ground up.

We’ve followed and filmed Gordon’s extraordinary journey over the years, witnessing the impact of vision, grit, and opportunity in action.

We’re proud to help share the voices of change makers like Gordon — people building real solutions and inspiring a generation across Africa.

Raised in the Kalaki district of Eastern Uganda during a time of civil war, our friend Anthony Emaru knows what it means to grow up through adversity. But his story is not one of struggle—it’s one of transformation.

We’ve had the privilege of following Anthony’s journey over the years, and recently visited him at his farm in Luweero for the final leg of our East Africa screening tour — where we screened his film with the local community against the backdrop of Uganda’s lush landscape.

With a Master’s in Horticulture earned through the RUFORUM program, Anthony founded 4Pillar Network, a youth-led initiative creating green-collar opportunities in agriculture.

Operating across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, 4Pillar supports over 2,500 smallholder farmers—empowering women, offering technical training, and building private sector partnerships. Anthony is helping shape a generation that sees farming not just as survival—but as a dignified, profitable, and powerful career.

Rounding up our screening tour, we arrived in Liberia — to meet the incredible Nelson Papi Kolliesuah.
A social entrepreneur, innovator, and community leader, Nelson has been driving change since his student days, when he led an award-winning vertical garden initiative in a Ugandan refugee settlement.

Now back in Liberia, he’s the founder of Eco-Energy Liberia, a fast-growing social enterprise tackling energy poverty with bold ideas and big impact — from distributing solar lights to over 30,000 people, to co-developing solar-powered water pumps that support over 300 farmers year-round.

We joined Nelson for the final leg of our screenings, witnessing firsthand the energy he’s bringing to rural communities through his solar innovations.

A truly remarkable close to an extraordinary journey!

It’s a rare and special opportunity to return to the remote places where we film — to bring the stories back to the communities they come from.

This month, we traveled to Lodwar, a town near Lake Turkana in Kenya, to meet up with Aipa Grace Bekah and her family! We had the chance to screen Grace’s film to her community.

The audience included rural Turkana women farmers, whom Grace has been training in climate-smart agricultural practices to help them adapt to the escalating effects of climate change in the region.

For many of these women, who are rarely celebrated, it was the first time seeing themselves and their achievements on the big screen- a large sheet of fabric hung from the eaves of the local church.

This was the beginning of a magical and challenging kind of three country road show.

Tough shoot in Burundi last week looking at the enormous challenge of access to safe drinking water for many Burundians. This week the water flows effortlessly from our taps in the office in Cape Town. Olivier Nihimbazwe and Water4Development continue their fight to ease the burden for so many affected by water-borne diseases in Burundi. A truly humbling experience.
