Please write an email to the clickable email address below saying NO to extending the pointless and costly ban - even if you just say 'NO' in the body, nothing else..

Dear South Africa,

Everybody’s favourite minister, Patel, has grown from banning crop tops and rotisserie chickens to banning the export of copper, brass, bronze and unbelievably even steel scrap, regardless of the fact that due to more than ten YEARS of his Price Preference System (PPS) the only scrap that was being exported was scrap that HAD NO MARKET in SA.

The PPS has already taken 62 BILLION Rand out of YOUR pockets to line the pockets of a handful of foundries, the biggest of whom have Patel's IDC as a major shareholder. The ban on scrap exports has made that far worse, because many scrap types that were already being forcibly sold by the PPS at up to 50% less than real value are now effectively worthless and going to landfills.

The export ban on scrap was initially implemented for 6 months, ostensibly to reduce theft of infrastructure, in December last year and extended by 6 months thereafter. It has clearly not worked and was never going to, but he is now proposing to extend it yet again.

This is not a scrap metal industry problem. It is YOUR problem. Every single company that wants to sell their old shelving, maintenance scrap, worn out machinery, every construction company, mine, chemical plant and paper mill, every person wanting to clean out their garage, scrap their old car or trailer, every destitute waste-picker pushing an old trolley filled with old cans and paint tins. Everyone.

Patel has called for objections to be emailed to [email protected] by the 7th of December 2023.

PLEASE oblige him and request every single person that you know do the same. We need to get our broken country working properly again. Please, do it NOW. The country is running out of time.
