*Clay, Library, Land studies*
“I initially had many ideas on how I wanted to approach this project: how I would photograph the community that used to live there and dig into archives to uncover more stories. But the land itself kept coming to mind, and it became the only thing I could focus on photographing. My collaborator, Zayaan Khan, had been collecting clay from the site, and gradually, the simplicity of the concept began to fall into place. I decided to photograph the emptiness of the suburb and try to capture any traces of life (or the lack thereof) among the vegetation.” Words by Kent Andreasen

Since 2023 The MAAK has been in cross-disciplinary dialogue about District 6 with artist/ researcher Zayaan Khan and photographer Kent Andreasen. The works presented in ‘Clay, Library, Land studies’ reflect on the collaborative gestures that have emerged in this process so far and are told through the lens of a new library we are currently building at Rahmaniyeh Primary School.

‘Clay, Library, Land Studies’ with be on show at Demo Projects (79 Roeland street, Cape Town) from 24th Oct - 9th Nov.

*Scape Awards of Excellence*
The MAAK has been nominated for this year’s Scape awards of excellence! We are proud to be shortlisted in the ‘community build of the year’ for the recently completed New Rest Valley Creche.

“Simple lines and strong forms make the scheme clearly identifiable from a far. Standing tall above a setting of one storey self-built homes, the facility is a landmark feature in the area and offers valuable civic pride for the community… “

More info about this project can be found on our website.

As always, a big thanks to our project partners who make this work possible and for the following team in support of this year’s Scape Awards:

TRUNX

“Made to hold and host,
Already moulded but taking shape.
Maybe we are more than what we were made for…”*

TRUNX is a bespoke architectural lamp informed by surplus masonry supply found in the brickyard and timber off-cuts salvaged from our shared studio workshop in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town.

The circular nature of this product reflects on the latent potential of material stock that is often overlooked or thrown away.

Price: R12,000 (DM for sales enquires)

Made in collaboration between The MAAK and Katya Volkova. With thanks to Cameron Barnes and Corobrik.

*Read about the full story of TRUNX on The MAAK’s website.
