Gen Z is about to enter the work place, yet we are still talking about millennials.
Are we ready?

According to Bloomberg, they have a spend power of USD 143 billion in the US alone. They take a stance on Brand and spend based on Influences and yes…. No longer need to have that drink but will rather v**e instead. Completely appalling to my Generation of course where we work hard and party hard (although, this is no longer fun as the recovery takes at least three days now!).

I recently posted a vlog on how Gen Z views Gender discussions – My 13-year-old is constantly telling me not to assume his gender whilst my friends Daughter in University will proudly use the male bathroom if she so chooses – cause why not? I can go to the Men’s bathroom if I feel like it. (See me here with shocked googly eyes). Of course, my fascination with this is purely selfish for my generation. Quite honestly where would ladies put make up on or clean that coffee spill or have a fat discussion about how that other person of the other s*x just upset me.

But on a serious note, Companies do need to adjust. It becomes more than unis*x bathrooms, flexible work hours and life leave (which by the way, I am in extreme support of). Leaders need to step up to “real” authenticity, collaboration, sharing with an intent to empower. We need to learn to trust the younger generation, allow the mistakes to happen and build blocks of support. This becomes engrained in everything we as leaders do. Review your processes, organigrams and systems. Ensure they can support the next Generation.

By the way….. Who comes after Gen Z? Last time I looked that was the last letter of the alphabet.

It may be time to diversify your portfolio beyond millennials.

I have noticed many vacancies being advertised for HR Officer, practitioner or business partner roles.

Are you sure these are 100% full time roles?

South African Business - Are you prepared for the Labour Law Amendments Bill?

Whilst we wait for a confirmed implementation date, it would be to your advantage to update your policies and engage your staff.

The LLA Bill provides for parental leave, adoption leave and commissioning parental leave. It further provides for the payment of parental benefits as well as commissioning parental benefits from the Unemployment Insurance Fund. It enables a prospective adoptive parent to access the adoption leave and adoption benefits, which are paid out by the Unemployment Insurance Fund. The LLA Bill was passed by the National Assembly and sent for concurrence to the National Council of Provinces.

Whilst the impact may appear simplistic, keep in mind how your current leave is treated and be cautious not to practice unfair implementation. For instance;
- Should you currently provide for paid maternity, it would be wise to provide for paid parental leave.
- Do you know what ten consecutive days means? Is this working day only?
- Which parent is entitled to Adoption or Commissioning parental leave and how is this decided?
- Is parental leave gender based?
- If there is a surrogacy agreement, who is entitled to what leave?

I encourage policy writers to download and review the full PDF. Should you require assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The Art of Bouncing Back

My son was in ICU last week rather unexpectant. Thankfully, he is fine and recovered.

Why am I sharing this with you?

He reminded me of how quickly we forget experiences and bounce back.

My son has T1 Diabetes and was diagnosed at the age of 18 months. Those early years were a steep learning curve for us and as in most cases, we found ourselves visiting the hospital often. However, as he grew, he became savvier, as did we, and the need for support diminished over the years. He is now 13! (Not sure how this happened and probably giving my age away).

Last week he went into a state of Diabetic Ketosis Acidosis and we rushed off to Trauma and were immediately placed into ICU. Here we are watching my Son get plugged into heart monitors, respirators and all the technical devices required. Dad and Mom are ashen and getting things done as one does in these situations.

What does my Son do; "Mom, take a photo, I can't take a selfie".

Really??? Here he is lying to all the monitors, terribly ill, can barely see and I must take a photo.
Why?
He wants to let his friends know that he is ok and will be back soon. This is just a "thing" as he puts it. (I am sure there is also some bragging here to be done).

Dutifully, I took a photo and off he sends it before the meds take effect and he falls asleep.

I sit watching him through the night and remind myself how blessed I am to have him in my life. How much I have learnt from him and will continue to learn.

Then I thought about work. How often has change not been forced upon us? How do we view this change? What is the impact of this change on not only us but our family as well?

I have always viewed change in a positive way. Sure, it is stressful but what is the golden nugget that you can take from it and run with?

Always remember;
- There is only one way and that is forward.
- It too shall pass.
- Always keep a sense of humour.
- Spend your time doing things you love.
- Work smart, not hard.
- Always do the best you can do.
- Learn from your mistakes. Move on. Do not beat yourself up.
- Find the positive in everything. It is there, I promise!
- Change is uncomfortable, but what would happen if you didn’t change

I want to thank my Son for the reminder that I am resilient. I am warrior.
I hope when you read this, you are reminded that you too are a warrior.
Embrace change.
Go for it!
