"Each day I move toward that which I do not understand. The result is a continuous accidental learning which constantly shapes my life." - Yo-yo Ma

I just loved the concept of "accidental learning" from Yo-yo Ma's quote. And I am moved by the intention of continuous movement towards what I don't understand as opposed to fear or aversion of that.

Youtube: Self Compassion

So if you look at the other two videos I’ve made, the one on The Freedom Model, and the one on Choice and Responsibility, I think what starts to emerge – it does for me anyway, is this idea of needing to, wanting to have compassion for the Self that created those untrue limiting assumptions in the first place.

If we go back to the Freedom Model, you’ll remember that what often triggers the negativity bias based interpretations are moments of threat, moments of danger. And as we get to understand, more and more, that part of our brain that houses that threat system – the amygdala, there’s often very little choice in those moments of threat. We come up with something that is purely based on getting us through the moment, surviving it, getting through it, getting us out the other side...

Welcome to this new year. On the one hand it is 'only' another 365 days, added to the previous years we've lived so far. On the other hand it is an invitation to start anew, recalibrate, inhale deeply and inhabit our lives afresh. It is a stimulus worthy of us choosing how we respond. Like Mark Nepo, I hope that you let no one keep you from your journey: ever towards your soul's shore, with its promise – too great to be ignored.

The Life Altering Practice of Understanding the Impact of Assumptions

In 2024's last segment in the series of Dialogues between myself and fellow Thinking Environment Faculty colleague Sophie Stephenson, we explore a question posed by Nancy Kline in a recent Faculty Forum:

Is it possible that untrue limiting bedrock assumptions (about the self and life) may be universally held, but that true liberating alternative assumptions are uniquely constructed?

In the ways in which Thinking Environment dialogue is always, for me, richly resonant with both convergence and divergence, this exchange took Sophie and I into fresh insights and more questions.

https://youtu.be/395Ai5cJR8s

One thing I know for sure is that a life lived ignorant of the impact and consequence of the assumptions being made is a very hard way to live. Whilst the responsibility required to take both cognisance and ownership of our assumptions is demanding and requires discipline and consistency, I believe it is, without a doubt, a life of freedom and possibility in comparison.

With love from my brave heart to yours,
Trisha Lord

"Words of encouragement motivated by the wish for someone’s happiness can function as a source of revitalising light, rousing courage and strength." - Daisaku Ikeda

I contemplated the practice of the Component of Encouragement when I read this quote from Daisaku Ikeda. The practice of the Components, as a thinking partner, is silent – not made present for the person who is thinking in any particular words from the person listening to them, but rather as an expression of a way of being. Being encouraging is manifested by ceasing competition whilst listening, and replacing any judgement, assessment, comparison or analysis with a genuine desire for the thinker to experience having the courage to move into the as yet unexplored territory of their thinking in order to make progress for themselves. Whether it is towards happiness, or clarity, or understanding or acceptance, or the courage to act, the offering of encouragement in a thinking environment is, I believe, motivated by wanting the best possible outcome for the thinker, and therefore does indeed act as a 'revitalising light'.

The Freedom Model: Breaking Limiting Assumptions

In this video, I share insights into the Freedom Model—a transformative framework that reveals how limiting assumptions are formed and how they shape our perception of life. Drawing from decades of teaching and my experience with Werner Erhard's work, I explore how we often confuse interpretations with facts, creating self-fulfilling prophecies that limit our potential.

Through the lens of the Thinking Environment and Incisive Questions, learn how to uncover untrue assumptions, develop self-compassion, and replace them with liberating truths that pave the way for a brighter future.

Discover how this model helps you:
- Understand how assumptions are built.
- Break free from negativity bias.
- Create new possibilities by questioning interpretations.

Join me in this journey of insight and transformation!

"In a culture that pushes us to focus not on what we can give, but on what we can take, what we tend to take is everything for granted." – Andrea Gibson

This quote kind of punched me in the stomach and does so again each time I read it. It has the ring of truth to it, I feel. It helps me to renew my commitment to the powerful invitation from the Component of Appreciation to 'notice what is good, and say it': to deepen my engagement with that practice.

For years now I have been unashamedly claiming that I am going to write a book. Well I am, it’s true! Its due date has come and gone countless times, but its author is undaunted. This week I think I even got the title. Mind you, I’ve thought before too. But there’s something about the ring of ...

Choice and Responsibility

Two inter-related ideas come ‘off the back’ of the Freedom Model (see video with this title). One of them is choice, and the other is responsibility. I’ve always loved the word responsibility because of what happens when you break it into two parts: response ability – in other words the ability to be able to respond to a situation, as opposed to react.

I think what the Freedom Model is asking us to explore and practice and look at – and I think I see a huge connection between this and the work we do in Thinking Sessions – is that moment when we are confronted by something happening in our lives, and we have a choice about how we interpret what’s happening.

Now, the thing is that the automatic interpretations that arise which, in the context of a Thinking Session, we would think of as the untrue limiting assumptions that arise – there’s no choice about those. Because the choice about those was made some time ago. Many, many years ago often. Those interpretations were often laid down when we were children, and they were laid down in moments of threat or stress. And they were normally designed to keep us safe, and likely did keep us safe at that moment in time. They got us out of the situation, and we’ve been using them ever since.

The interesting thing is that now here we are as an adult, and we’re facing a situation and it’s triggering those old interpretations. This is where the idea of choice and responsibility comes into play, because in that moment, if we are doing the work that we do in Thinking Sessions regularly enough, we may have an opportunity to recognise “ah! There’s that assumption again! That old familiar assumption…..”

In my case, one of the assumptions that comes up regularly is that of “this isn’t fair!” And particularly “this isn’t fair on me”. So, over the years I’ve learned to recognise that if ever I’m facing a situation and the thought I’m having about it is “this isn’t fair” that there is a very strong likelihood that I’m not actually present to what’s going on in that moment. I’m now trapped in a recurring, untrue limiting assumption based on the past.

And it’s in that moment that I have an opportunity to make a choice – to choose a different response, and to look it at in a different way. In terms of the Thinking Environment, we would call that creating a different, truer and more liberating assumption which generates a different lens to look at the situation. One that might give me different ways of thinking about it, different options, different choices: more freedom.

"Could It Only be Two Streams of Attention?" with Sophie Stephenson

This latest recording of a dialogue between myself and Sophie Stephenson was a thoroughly joyful roller-coaster ride that took us from the precipice of challenging a "holy cow" of Thinking Environment theory (I know we don't have any of those, but just try telling any one of us that there aren't actually Ten Components of a Thinking Environment and see what kind of response you get!) full circle back to a deep appreciation for how accurately Nancy Kline managed to distinguish and then capture the vast world of complexity that lies behind the apparently "simple" idea of there being three streams of attention that we are managing in order to offer Generative Attention.

In addition to the mind-expanding (at one point I even admit to feeling mind blown!) exhilaration of where our thinking took us, I have to also say that I really loved the experience of Thinking Environment Dialogue this particular experience was. From the unexpected curve ball of the other person's turn, not what you were expecting they were going to say, through to the geeky moment at around 37 minutes where we both disappeared temporarily into apps on our phones to access The Component of Information (it worked so well to give us something we needed!), through to the very emergence that we were exploring happening between us as we talked of it, this for me is the joy of Dialogue in a Thinking Environment.

We would love to know what you think if you can spare just under 46 minutes to listen, and look forward to any comments on where this magical mystery tour took you as you listened.
