Have you found it difficult to back into the ‘groove’ post festive season?

Well, personally I have been struggling to shift into gear this year, and since 2020 was so challenging, I naturally put my tardiness down to just that.
I am big on analogies, and believe that every single thing on this earth is somehow linked to another; that there is a lesson in everything.
I finally decided that I would somehow need to do a hard shift if I am to get my 2021 started.
Why even would I need a hard shift? I am a naturally driven, motivated individual who knows what she wants and also know how to pursue that.
I am no expert in the motor world, but I know that hard shifting with manual transmission usually has to do with a problem in the gear system or with the clutch. Manual transmission issues can develop because of high mileage, abuse, or lack of proper maintenance.
Naturally, this means if you can't shift your car into gear, a problem with the transmission will keep you from going anywhere.

Some tell tale signs:
-Lack of Response
-Whining, Clunking and Humming
-Grinding or Shaking
-Refuses to Go Into Gear
-Gears Slipping
-Dragging Clutch

I relate to all of the above on so many levels! I realise that my vehicle requires proper care if it is to carry me on this journey.
So I’m starting my year, finally shifting into 1st gear with a promise to myself to improve on my self-care!

To everyone out there. This is your reminder that it is ok to prioritise yourself; that checking your oil is an attempt to remedy, and that it is absolutely ok to start a little later.

Take care and stay safe!

TIP 5: Be Yourself

So you have done your research and have formulated an image of what the perfect employee looks like at the organisation for which you are interviewing. Based on this assessment you get into "actor mode".
You know what to do, what to say, and have even practiced how to say it, so technically you have this one in the bag right?

WRONG!

PLEASE don't misinterpret this - you cannot lose all of your inhibitions and stroll into the interview room like you would your mother's house in search of Sunday lunch leftovers. Neither can you waltz in there and greet your interviewer with a “hey bro” and a high five.
It’s all about striking the right balance between being professional and being your authentic self. If you aren’t yourself, the interviewer won’t get a true idea of whether you are a good cultural fit for the team and company. This could result in the organisation hiring a "cultural misfit", and could end up in you being extremely unhappy in your new job and possibly leaving the organisation within the first year.

Think of the company culture as being the personality of the company. You wouldn’t choose to spend a large portion of your time with a personality that you clashed with, so why would you risk working for a company which is the wrong cultural fit for you?

REMEMBER: Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.😉

Love and greetings

TIP 4: Ask insightful questions

Ever heard the phrase "You don't know what you don't know?"

Let's unpack:

You probably don’t know as much as you think you do. When put to the test, most people find they can’t explain the workings of everyday things they think they understand. Take a simple gadget like a television remote. If someone were to ask you how it works, you would easily be able to demonstrate how to switch it on, off, increase the volume, etc.
But how does it really work...what causes the increase in volume?
Soon you discover unexpected gaps in your knowledge.
In psychology, we call this cognitive barrier the illusion of explanatory depth. It means you think you fully understand something that you actually don’t.

That's a mouthful!

In the same way, asking insightful questions during an interview could help in identifying the gaps you may have missed during your research of the organisation.
You may just discover that the values of a particular organisation are not aligned with your personal values: this is a recipe for disaster.
Asking intelligent questions is not only going to help you decide whether you are interested in the role, but it will also demonstrate to the interviewer that you’re interested and serious about the job. Asking questions about measuring future success and what’s expected of you will show you’re a forward thinker and keen to contribute to the success of the company.

Till next time!

TIP 3: Keep your answers concise and focused

As interviewers we often struggle with the 'ramblers'- the ones who say a lot but answers very little.
As HR Practitioners, nothing excites us more than a candidate who is able to display his/her skillset in a concise, yet thorough manner.

In learning how to interview well, learning how to craft concise, pointed answers is paramount. A common mistake amongst candidates when interviewing is over explaining.
We agree, giving thorough answers are of utmost importance BUT not all questions require a 15-minute speech. Short, concise answers that brings across the point will convey confidence and allows the hiring manager to dictate the direction of the interview.

Remember, if the hiring manager wants more information they will ask.

Your time with each interviewer is limited so be mindful of rambling. Practice your answers beforehand to help keep you focused.

Happy practicing, and remember to drop us a message, mail or dm if you are still uncertain!

TIP 2: Faking confidence

Ever walk out of an interview and think: "I should have said this, or I could have...."
Even the most experienced people are met with pre-interview jitters.

Don’t let nerves get in the way of you landing the job of a lifetime. Even if you don’t feel sure of yourself, fake it until both you and the interviewer believe in your sense of confidence.

Ever heard of the term meta-awareness?
It is, simply put, maintaining self awareness during situations of stress. THINK about giving a firm handshake, sitting up straight and smiling when appropriate. Be CONSCIOUS of maintaining eye contact without staring or focusing on one particular spot. Do NOT stare at the ceiling but DO NOT stare down your hiring manager either.
Be AWARE to listen to a question, THINK about the response and then confidently proceed to responding.

Above all, remember to breathe and enjoy engaging in meaningful dialogue with the interviewer(s).

Until next time,
