After spending a number of years cutting my teeth and honing my skills and eye in the Fine Art auction world I grabbed the opportunity to start an independent consultancy at the end of 2013. Up-Skilling, a contemporary buzzword, also encouraged me to add paper conservator to my feathered cap. The advisory is to compliment all aspects of art collection management. I recently researched a stellar Irma Stern from the Zanzibar period for Sotheby's Modern and Contemporary African Art sale in London on 27 September 2024. "Flipping" - the action that should result in the doer's mouth being washed out with soap (or given this is art, turpentine).

Careful consideration should be made when thinking of selling on work regarding the wider implications this action can have. Artistic careers have been ruined by flipping taking place notably with the work of young artists by speculative buyers. This is not about buying what you love, but rather a mission to profiteer from strategic maneuvering.

From dealers and art advisers to educators and artists, everyone has strong feelings about the practice of “flipping” artworks for a quick profit.

One of the first "things" I do when viewing an artwork for the first time is to look at the back of the work. The "verso" often tells me more about the work than the owner can. I am not alone in this belief - read below:
